080806-17 THE NEW GUY
I HAD BEEN SITTING IN ONE OF MY USUAL HAUNTS IN THE CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK BETWEEN CLEVELAND AND AKRON, OHIO FOR ABOUT THREE HOURS ON A SUNDAY MORNING IN APRIL. NOTHING…BUT NOTHING INTERESTING HAD COME ALONG AND I FINALLY DECIDED TO PACK IT IN AND MOVE TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PARK. I PACKED UP MY GEAR AND STOOD UP, TURNED AROUND, AND STEPPED OVER THE LOG I’D BEEN SITTING ON, TOOK TWO STEPS, AND ON THE THIRD, ALMOST STEPPED RIGHT ON THIS LITTLE GUY.

What a gorgeous little guy, Mike! Mama sneaked him in there behind your back—or maybe had to wait to get him out till you finally got bored and went away. Just never know what you’ll find underfoot/1 lol Fantastic photo- all good things come to those who get up to leave, I guess. LOL

Oh my gosh, Mick!!! I have DREAMED of taking this photo!!! When I lived in Colorado (a couple of years ago) I would go to Cherry Creek State Park every day after work and cruise through the woods, hoping to find a baby fawn!!! I’m sooooo jealous…but, soooooo blessed to see this picture!!!

What an adorable, adorable image … I can’t believe I missed it, and your great story, before this … but now I’m doubly glad you WON!!!!! HOW CUTE!!!!! Just tooooo precious!!!!! Bless his little heart!!!!! Did he jump up and run off right away?? Was mommy standing near??? AWWW!! LOVE it!!! Congratulations again!!!
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
Thanks very much, Lois. No, he didn’t move a muscle. I shot 2 1/2 36 exposure rolls of him and he stayed completely still, barely even blinking. He was so new that I’m not sure he could move very much yet. It was a very dry morning and if you look closely you can see that his fur is still a little damp, so I think he had JUST been born. And Momma never showed up at all. Luck was with me BIG TIME that morning.
I appreciate your comment, Hon, as always.
Stephen Vecchi...
Great deer shot Mike. Congrats on wining the 100% challenge.
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied

Pat Yager
Congratulations on winning the 100% Challenge, Mick! This is a fabulous photo! My son had nearly the same experience a couple of years ago. He was jogging through a meadow when all of a sudden he spotted two deer standing rigidly still watching him. He stopped, with one booted foot held in the air. For a couple of seconds he stood there motionless looking back at them. Just as he was ready to move, his peripheral vision caught sight of something just below where he was to put his foot down- a newborn fawn. In that fraction of a second he was able to thrust his moving foot out a bit further to miss it. A close call! – Pat
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
Thanks, Pat. They do hide awfully well like that, don’t they ? I appreciate the comment.
Jan Timmons
Remarkable capture, with such beautiful colours and clarity. Good ironic story.
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
Thanks, Jan. Finding him like that was a real surprise. And I hadn’t realized just how small a newborn fawn is…it would have just about fit in my hands.
I’m glad you like the image and I appreciate the comment.
Marjorie Wallace
Big congratulations, Mick on winning this challenge. What an amazing story about nearly stumbling over this litte fawn. Mom was probably somewhere near just waiting for you to pack up and leave. At my last house, we always had a lot of deer that would come and visit my property. One summer, a fawn arrived all by itself and stayed for several days. Seems to me I recall it being abut two weeks. I even allowed the little guy to lunch on my roses. Ha! That was OK just to have him safe in my big back yard. Then one day along came an adult deer and it was like a silent message, the deer seemed to say, “come along now, it is time to go” and off they bounded across the road and down the ravine. An experience I will never forget.
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
That kind of thing does stay with you, Doesn’t it ? Thanks for the comment and the story, Marjorie. Much appreciated.

Carole Russell
Well done on winning the challenge Mick – beautiful photograph
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
Thanks, Carole. I appreciate it.
Bluenorther
Great capture. Does leave their little ones so they can feed or take care of other deer business. The little ones will stay like that until that until the doe returns. It keeps them safe from predators as they usually have no scent at this age. It is probably only a day or two old at most. The doe was probably watching you from cover by this point. A lucky find for you and a treasured photo for sure. Congratulations on your win. Well deserved. Leslie
MICKSPIXPHOTOS replied
Thanks, Very much, Leslie. I appreciate it.

To answer you from before, I’m doing well and the weather has broken and spring has sprung and any other cliches you can think of. Both yesterday and today were in the 80’s ( about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year ) ( as well as close to 20 points above the average IQ in Findlay !!!!! ) with low humidity and a nice breeze and wall to wall sunshine.
It’s very good to hear from you, Simon. Say Hi to Mel and all the Mini-Whittakers for me.
