This is Pip, a young speckled pigeon that has made his home with us. One night, as we sat eating at the table, it flew down on to our porch and refused to leave. It was obviously very young, and very tame – I can only assume somebody hand-reared it and then tried to release it. Unfortunately, pigeons have a homing instinct, and this one has picked our home, and is sticking with it. Luckily we have a nice big aviary where he can roost every night, as he is as little afraid of our cats and dogs as he is of us. Most days we let him out to fly around the garden and play with the children, but he always, always comes home.

In between cooking, shopping, doing laundry, washing dishes, changing nappies and schooling my children I sometimes find a spare moment to doodle, draw or photograph something or someone. Those are the moments that keep me going, even if they are few and far between. Food for the artist mom’s soul.

What a lovely story, although this life is not healthy for the bird unless you plan to keep it as a house pet. I love the picture – not one you see every day. Great facial expression you caught.
Great work micklyn ☺
I wish we could keep it as a house pet (it wants to be inside, and takes every chance it gets to come inside) but we have too many cats for it to be safe inside!! It is indigenous to South Africa and I wish we could release it, but it just won’t go! It seems very healthy and happy, we feed it wild bird seed and it is so affectionate and cute… gets jealous if it doesn’t get enough attention!! Thanks for your comment, Kira!
