Belle had 8 puppies last winter and though we wanted to keep one little girl puppy, her puppies proved so popular with friends and family that in the end there were none left for us. So, before getting Belle neutered, we thought we would let her have one more litter…. Well, she fell pregnant and had ONE puppy. A girl. Yay!! So this is Dinah, our (fat) little girl puppy, born just before Christmas and a true darling.
Belle was most distressed in the week after she gave birth as she couldn’t understand where the rest of her puppies were. I think she felt completely confused to only have one after having eight! In the end, though, she settled for adopting a red rubber duck that she heard one of the kids squeaking one day. She cared for it beautifully, cleaning it and loving it alongside Dinah, guarding it fiercely and refusing to let us take it away from her. Gotta love dogs. : )

She is mostly Jack Russell with a bit of fox terrier and I’m not sure what thrown in – not a very big dog, but very cute! thanks so much for your comment, Silvia!

LOL!! I can so understand that story. Dogs have the most amazingly fierce maternal instincts (I know ours – who we thought would be a terrible mother just changed overnight … of course she adopted almost any object to replace her pups once they left … funny and distressing at the same time!)
