Hi Shelly, superb macro. I’m so jealous! Even if I manage to get the damn thing to stand still long enough, my macros never come out like this :-( Could you add to the description what lens you used (& rings, bellows, whatever) and what kind of lighting setup? I would really like to learn from this!
Shelly Hiebert replied
He was wading through a pile of water on my deck after a big rain fall so I think by the the time he got to the step I captured him on he was really tired! This was natural overcast ‘lighting’, and I used my 105 macro lens at f14. I actually have blown it up quite a bit and cropped it to get close up detail. No rings or bellows. Just me crouched down in a puddle of water getting real close and personal! Thanks so much for your interest, and for you comment :)
Ken Boxsell
Gotta love those eyes….......Great shot Shelly
Shelly Hiebert replied
Those eyes are pretty cool are they not!? Thank you very much Ken :)

dancinfreakshow
Such an amazing capture Shelly. Did you know that the average person eats 9 spiders in their lifetime? Kinda makes you not want to sleep…LOL. I hope it’s not one of these bad boys:) Fabulous work.
Shelly Hiebert replied
That is some information I wish you would have kept to yourself Robert :P Nasty! Thanks anyway :)
Clare Forder
Shelly this is amazing – such great detail. He kind of reminds me of a gooseberry with all those little spikes…. ;) I’m not a huuuuge fan of spiders, but I love the colour of this. Your macro shots are just awesome!
Shelly Hiebert replied
A gooseberry eh? Interesting! Thank you very much for your comment Clare. I always appreciate your thoughts :)
HenkStolk
woow, creepy.. good shot
Shelly Hiebert replied
Creepy, but kinda cute too don’t you think?! Thanks so much Henk :)
Vikram Franklin
Given that you’ve done this hand-held, manual focussed while bending over to go nose-to-nose with him – and having tried this myself (sad story) – this is sooooo difficult and an awesome capture! So incredibly sharp – you can see every one of his eyes!
Shelly Hiebert replied
Were you spying on me Vikram?! You pretty much nailed the whole scene. I found him in an akward spot and I had to get into an akward position to capture him. I sure hope you were not spying because it probably was an interesting sight! Thanks kindly for your comment :)
Carlos Teófilo
Magnific beautiful Shelly.

Hey Shelly, nearly missed this one, catching up on me being away, glad I spotted this big girl you’ve captured here oh so well. Great focus on the eyes and jaws, excellent macro my friend. Good to see you’re still dong the odd spider shot amongst all your other great work :)
Shelly Hiebert replied
I have become very interested in spiders thanks to you Pete! She was really slow after wading through a small lake on our deck so by the time she got to the end she was tired and nice and still. I am so glad you like this one :) I am sure there will always be the odd spider shot show up here and there :)
Paul Wilkin
This could be in National Geographic. Hairy fellow isn’t he? Paul.
Shelly Hiebert replied
National Geographic?! Wow! Thank you very much Paul! And yes it sure is hairy!
Dean Mullin
