Cafe Man

Shelly Hiebert

Cafe Man

I sat and watched this man slowly drink his coke and read his paper at a cafe in Vienna Austria. I thought the light was lovely and he looked like an interesting character so I quietly snapped this shot.

Taken with a Nikon D70s.

I am the same Shelly when ever I photograph a stranger outside. It is something I love doing but am always a bit nervous. I took a photo of a drunk once and he swung a punch at me . . . he hit the wall . LOL

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

I have not had anyone swing at me yet but I am sure that day will come. I find I am more and more interested in photographing street people. Could get me in trouble one day ;(

Very captivating, you have definitely capturea a moment here. Immediately I’m drawn to want to know more about him, what is he thinking, what is he reading about etc. etc. The light spot immediately over his head also makes it a different and slightly surreal…great shot!

You know, you really ought to think about entering some of your work into some sort of gallery. Your work has something very special to it, not quite sure what it is, but it is unique!!! You’ve got some talent, girl!!! LOVING this shot !!! Love the WienerSchnitzel and Homefry sign, love to see some german writing every now and again.

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

Replying 18 days later isn’t so bad is it Andy ;) This is right up there with one of the nicest and most incouraging comments I have ever recieved on here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart :)

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

I really appreciate your kind comment and that you took the time to leave it. If you feel like you are sitting in the cafe there watching him, then that is a really big compliment as far as I am concerned. Thank you very, very much Samantha :)

This is an amazing candid! Brilliant! If nothing else put you in the category of being a genius photographer, I say this does. Congratulations!

How did I miss this? You told me to tell you if I think you missed some of my work and I am definitely demanding that you do the same to me. I feel like a goofball for not noticing this before.

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

Ahahaha Jerame! Ya made me smile! What a very, very kind comment to make, thank you :)

  • Ryan Young

    Ryan Young

good shot with great potential. looks as though you’ve cropped something out of the right side, making the composition a bit awkward. would be better if he were “facing” more into the frame. also the highlights on the newspaper are blown; it would be nice to see some texture there.

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

Yes I have done some cropping and I do agree with you on the newspaper being blown out, you are very correct on that. We may have to agree to disagree on the composition. I tend to like compositions that are not ‘correct’ I guess but I do appreciate your thoughts on that.

I have only been on Redbubble for 8 months and into photography the past two years. I have learned a lot but am still in the learning process. I really appreciate your honesty and your feedback…Redbubble can tend to be a bit fluffy I suppose so receiving a comment like yours is definitely welcome.

Thank you very much for your time and your honesty Ryan :) I may have to rework this image :)

  • Ryan Young

    Ryan Young

sorry, in previous comment i meant the left side has been cropped (to the right of the subject)

  • Shelly Hiebert replied

I figured that is what you were referring to and I understand your thoughts. I felt this crop amplified his being solo with only the dinner menu and (blown out!) newspaper and coke. I wanted to really draw attention to his being solo if that makes sense? Thanks again for your thoughts Ryan :)
