Mt Ngauruhoe (aka Mt Doom), North Island, New Zealand.
Tongariro National Park.
This was the second time I’ve climbed this mountain. The first time was many years ago and there was snow on the top, actually more like ice on the top. This time there was no snow just a barren volcanic, rocky landscape.
My friend Russ is in the middle of the shot and above him are a few more people and a group of teenagers wearing blue and red.
A great mountain to climb but you have to be aware of the risks. Falling rocks from people climbing above you and the weather can turn at any time. A week after we had climbed this mountain a group of American tourists had to be rescued from the mountain. The weather had turned bad and they didn’t have the right clothing to stay warm or enough supplies to sit out the storm.
We only had a few rocks coming down the mountain at us, and the weather had actually gotten better by the time we reached the top. Both Russ and I are experienced mountain climbers and took all the right safety precautions.
