This is National Falls in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, Australia.

On a mild winter’s day with bright sun, shooting in this darker valley was a bit tricky.
The bright sunlight on the leaves of the tree contrasts strongly with the shaded falls.
The breeze made close shots impossible as the spray landed on my camera lens.

I liked the swirling water as it cascaded down the slope. From here the water fell over a cliff that was so sheer that you couldn’t see the bottom & the side view was obstructed by trees.
I might find a way of getting a view next time.

Photographed with a Canon 400D at F11, ISO 100, 1.6 seconds.

Canon Photography Only, Sept 2011.

I sold a medium sized photographic print of this photo to a mystery buyer on Redbubble on May 5, 2013.

754 views as of May 8, 2013.

Excellent capture Michael..yes mate I want

  • Thanks for the compliment & fave mate. This one is easy. Turn off the Princes Hwy at Waterfall into McKell Ave. It’s a few kms along on the left hand side. The lighting is very tricky on a sunny day.

Magnificent scene and capture, Michael. Looking forward to seeing what other perspectives you may find. Falls like this are so ‘uncooperative’ but there’s an urge to rise to the challenge, which you always do. Cheers!

  • Thanks heaps Tula. With Australia being a relatively dry country, there is rarely a lot of water in our waterfalls, so we rely on the framing more so than other countries. I gave up on this spot the first time I saw it.
Next time I’ll get down there with a bit of cloud cover or maybe twilight & see what I can produce.

The long exposure shows the swirl, which you have highlighted so well in the foreground centre. Great composition. I now get it.

  • Thanks Anthony. Yep, the swirls are more interesting to me than the waterfall. This scene is a challenge. I’ll be back for more.

Mixture of warm sunlight and blue cast of the sky create a lovely blend on it. Good one Mike
