Your cheque is in the ....... loo by

A great country mailbox spotted on the way from Coonabarabran to the Warrumbungle National Park, NSW, Australia.

The backyard toilet design is complete with redbacked spider. Those of us who were brought up in the country with backyard toilets will remember checking for redback spiders & other biting insects & animals before we took our place on the throne.

I noticed that the letter slot is covered with a real spider web, so there must be the real thing there as well.

Photographed with a Canon 400D.

I couldn’t find a decent YouTube clip to add here, but for those who want to be reminded, here are the lyrics of that famous ‘Redback on the toilet seat’ song.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite!
I jumped high up into the air,
And when I hit the ground,
That crafty red-back spider
Wasn’t nowhere to be found.

I rushed in to the missus,
Told her just where I’d been bit,
She grabbed the cut throat razor blade,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said, “Just forget what’s on your mind,
And call a doctor please,
‘Cause I’ve got a feeling that your cure
Is worse than the disease.”

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
And now I’m here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight,
And I curse that red-back spider
On the toilet seat last night.

I can’t lay down, I can’t sit up,
And I don’t know what to do,
And all the nurses think it’s funny,
But that’s not my point of view.
I tell you it’s embarrassing,
And that’s to say the least
That I’m to sick to eat a bite,
While that spider had a feast!

And when I get back home again,
I tell you what I’ll do,
I’ll make that red-back suffer
For the pain I’m going through.
I’ve had so many needles
That I’m looking like a sieve,
And I promise you that spider
Hasn’t very long to live!

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
And now I’m here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight,
And I curse that red-back spider
On the toilet seat last night.

Country born & bred but now located in Sydney, Australia.

I’m fascinated by the beauty of nature & in particular Australian native flowers & landscapes. I also love colour & anything unusual.
The Blue Mountains are my favourite spot at the moment.

haha! I started singing the song as soon as I saw it! Well, actually, truth is I shuddered on seeing the spider, lol, then started singin’! :D

    Wonderful find and shot!

    Ahh, the memories, ay! ;D

  • Thanks Donna. Now I remember having to hold on during those cold winters !!
In my 18 years growing up in the bush I think I only saw one redback in the loo. Plenty of other types though.
I’m glad they weren’t as big as this one!!

Haha – love (or more honestly, hate) that spider!

  • Just as well that you didn’t grow up in the country then. Thanks for the comment Mike.

LOL … LOVE IT ! ! We’re not exactly in the country and our toilets are indoors … our Redbacks hide inside the bases of the uprights of the pool fence.

  • Mmm .. I’m glad you can see them & watch them. I hope they don’t learn to swim.
    Thanks for the fave Trish.

Funny you should say that !
I have fished one out of the pool alive …. apparently spiders can survive under water for some time ! I always skim and check the pool carefully before anyone swims :) Mostly they disappear rapidly up the hollow uprights of the fence as soon as anyone approaches !

  • Yikes .. I hope you know what to do in case of bites.
