Country Sunshine by Michael Matthews

Driving home from my mum’s place in Garah in the north west of New South Wales, I left with drizzling rain but it cleared up 100kms down the road to bright sunshine.

I spotted this windmill in front of a mountain just north of Boggabri & thought it would make a good photo.

After taking a few shots I saw a sunflower that would fit well into the scene.
Sunflowers used to be grown commercially here (maybe there are still pockets of growers around) & there are many sunflower plants growing wild on the side of the road from the dropped seeds which provide a lot of bright colour for drivers.

Boggabri is in the north west of NSW in Australia.

Just north of Sydney, there was a storm with torrential rain.

Well done with this tricky composition Michael.

  • Thanks Ian. I’m looking at it now & wondering why I didn’t get the flower higher up above the mountain.

Great image Michael. The sunflower works well there in the foreground.

  • Thanks a lot Mike. I almost missed it in the long grass.

It look as though the sunflower has just jumped up in front of you and thrown its hands in the air for your shot lol ! it adds a lovely contrast to the blue and the ruggedness of the scene behind ,great capture Michael

  • Just the effect I was looking for Trudi. It was one of those ‘Turn around & grab that shot’ moments. Thanks for the compliment & fave.

Great shot Michael. Wonderful contrast between the mill and flower.

  • Thanks John. I thought it was so typically Australian.
