Fitzroy Falls .. all the way down by

This is the beautiful Fitzroy Falls in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.

There is a high railing at this lookout (for safety reasons) which makes it difficult to get a good shot of the whole of the falls.
I can’t remember if I used the tripod here or just held the camera tightly.

The spectacular spray of water hitting the rocks 80 metres below doesn’t quite show up here. It is a great sight which I recommend you see for yourself.

There are several lookouts providing spectacular views of these falls. Look out for more photos from different angles.

This is part of the Moreton National Park.

Although long known to the aborigines, who passed by it on their migrations from the coast to the Highlands, the falls were ‘discovered’ in the 1820s by Charles Throsby, pioneer settler of Bong Bong, whose property extended as far as the falls itself.

Its spectacular beauty made it a favourite place for the Throsbys to bring their many guests on picnics. One of these, NSW Governor Fitzroy, visited in 1850 and in typically modest manner named the falls after himself.

Twelve years later, when the area was surveyed, they were still referred to as ’Throsby’s waterfall’, but the name Fitzroy was to win out.

The falls lie in the path of the Yarrunga Creek, which drops over 80 metres down the escarpment, and flows on into the Kangaroo River. The water flow is not as massive, nor as irregular, as in the past due to a water catchment dam further upstream today.

The long view

Country born & bred but now located in Sydney, Australia.

I’m fascinated by the beauty of nature & in particular Australian native flowers & landscapes. I also love colour & anything unusual.
The Blue Mountains are my favourite spot at the moment.

Beautiful one Michael – one of my favourite local spots. There is another good lookout farther around where you can get front on shots.

  • Thanks Ian. I got shots from all around. There’s more to come. This is just my first choice.

Oh yes, VERY nice Michael. I can remember using up a full roll of 24 exposure colour slide film on these falls back in about 1983 when we were working over that side. I, too, found a few other vantage points I remember. Great to see.

  • Thanks Peter. We tend to take digital cameras for granted. I don’t know how I would have coped with a film camera at this beautiful spot.

Great shot Michael! That sure is a long way down!!

  • Thanks Gail. That’s something you try not to think about while you are dangling the camera over the edge.

Wow, again perfect exposure on this gorgeous fall….what an amazing view!

  • Thanks for the great compliment & fave Chris. I was fascinated with the way the water bounced off the rocks at the bottom. Was wishing I had a movie camera.

Great shot Michael. Beautifully taken. I would be a bit nerv ous to hold the camera out over the edge. I hereby name it the Matthews falls lol.

  • Lol .. Thanks John. My head was going through the worst case scenario of losing it & having to buy a new one.

    Nice work Michael !
You did well to get the full drop from that viewing platform !
I see we have researched the same site for historical information :)

  • Thanks Trish. I guess we have to be careful with any info on the net. We tend to believe something until we see another opinion.
It was hard to pick the best two from this spot. I still have another that looks great despite the tight angle.
