Rugged Australian coastline at Cape Solander by

Whilst waiting for the whales to surface at Cape Solander, I took a few photos of the beautiful & rugged coastline with the changing blues of the water as the waves crashed against the shore.

Cape Solander is at Kurnell which is 22 kms south of the centre of Sydney, Australia & is in the Botany Bay National Park.

A whale finally made an appearance after about an hour of waiting & thrilled the crowd with it’s breaching & tail flipping.
Unfortunately my telephoto lens wasn’t strong enough to get good focussed shots … just happy memory snaps.

Cape Solander provides a good vantage site to view Humpback whales on their annual migration from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Australia’s east coast to the north. During this migration the whales keep close to the coastline to avoid the southerly moving East Australian Current.

The northerly migration begins in May and ends around the end of July each year.

For the journey back to Antarctica the Humpback whales swim further out to sea along with the East Australian Current and cannot be seen from land.

Taken with a Canon 400D, RAW Mode, 0.2 seconds, ISO 100, F22, Flash White Balance.

It is a beautiful vista Michael – and I love those blues in the sea and the amazing rock formation. It is a shame about the whales – but you will have great memories hey!

  • Thanks Sharon. The blue colour in the bottom left is magic. I saw the whales a few years back when they came all the way past the harbour bridge in the harbour. If only I had my camera then. It was a great to see though .. both times.
