Hanging Rock at Blackheath
Located near Blackheath in the Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia.
The rock hangs into the Grose Valley.
This spot is 2 hours drive west of Sydney & then an hours walk to this site. The area is not fenced or well signposted. You need good hiking boots because of the steep surfaces & loose gravel. I wouldn’t reccommend taking children there.
The rock is much bigger than it appears here, but I wasn’t game to get too close to the edge of the cliff.
Featured in National Parks of the World on June 4, 2009, Blue Mountains of NSW group, Oct 8, 2008, Your Country’s Best group on November 5, 2009 & in #1 Artists of Redbubble on December 2, 09.
This image appears in the Blue Mountains 2010 calendar.

Bev Woodman
Wow Michael, I’m loving this journey – thank you.
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Bev. I thought the coloured leaves of the tree bottom left really added to this shot. I have bought better shoes since this walk/slide around the mountain.
Michael Rowley...
great image michael !!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Michael. I’m hoping to get this again in a softer light.
Bev Woodman
Great work!!
LYN EVANS
Ooooh my goodness, this is gorgeous.
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Lyn. It’s an amazing sight.
Philip Johnson
looks like you are better with heights than I am , great shot
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Philip. Actually I have a fear of heights but there are some fears I am willing to face to get a good shot. Watching the couple walk right to the edge (in the other shot) was hair raising.

Thanks Evita. I might inch a little closer to the edge next time & get more of it in shot .. perhaps.
Patricia Montg...
An awesome scene! Well done! (And congrats on the feature – well deserved!)
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you Patricia. This one is off the beaten track, but well worth seeing.
Sharon Davey

Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Sharon. This one is leading the race in the favourites event so far.
Dennis Gay
G’day Michael,
What a grand sight and what a grand photograph you have made.
The exposure is very good under those conditions, the depth of field blurs the background sufficiently to help isolate the subject, the focus is nice and sharp, contrast and highlights are well controlled and the colours are rich, earthy and very “Australian”.
The composition is compact and strong showing off the geological feature very well indeed.

Dennis
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you Dennis. This was the first time I had seen the rock & when I saw the angle with the sunlight behind it I was not very optimistic about getting good images. They turned out better than expected & the two youngsters walking to the edge was scary but made a great photo (the other image). I’m planning to capture it in a milder light fairly soon .. overcast or sunset. The polarizing lens was a great help of course.
Steven Sandner
That is crazy! stunning and awesome! great work!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks for the compliment Steven. If you are game, have a look at the other photo with the two fearless people sitting on the edge.

What an amazing view – a fabulous shot!!!!!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you very much Lori.
redrosedigital
Wonderful composition – the rock formation is so unusual. I also like how the trees above reinforce the top of the rock. I never realised that this existed in the Blue Mountains!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Rosanne. This one has surprisingly become my most favoured image. This area is a bit on the dangerous side with it’s sheer drops & loose gravel so isn’t strongly advertised & signposted.
i l d i l a z...
Incredible nice view,great image Michael!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you for the compliment.
EarthGipsy
The more I travel in our beautiful country, the more of these knife edge type bluffs I find. You have captured this one beautifully Micheal. Very nice image :) Blackheath is indeed a gem amongs gems!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you. It’s quite a sight.
Rosy Kueng
Amazing! Fantastic capture Michael!!! Really beautiful scenery :O) love the colours contrasting each other…
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Rosy. It was a very day & the polarizing lens was a must. It worked well with the sunlight on the sapling leaves in the foreground.
Pat Yager
This is an incredible shot, Michael! I would never have had any idea of its existence, if it weren’t for your photo! Thanks for posting it for us! – Pat
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Pat. If you’ve seen the other photo, you would see a gap between the cliff & the rock which makes you wonder how it is still hanging there. I love these wonders of nature.
Cheryl Lunde
Awesome capture!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Cheryl. I’m glad this one has turned out to be so popular.
LindaMcCarthy

Sharon Mau
Good onya Michael, this is so beautiful!! I cannot imagine walking to the edge. I would be lying on my tummy to peer over the edge as my heart is racing. It is an amazing formation and so beautiful with the mountains and forests in the background as the sun illuminates the stone and eons of rainfall has etched the lines and characteristics of this beautiful cliff. I love the ironrich red colour of the stone in contrast with the soft blues and green foliage. The splash of warm foreground colour adds a wonderful third dimension to this lovely landscape portrait!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you for the great compliment Sharon. This image has just surprisingly overtaken the Sylvia Falls & Grevillea macro photos in terms of viewing stats & favourite gongs. I’m glad people like it.
Anne-Marie Lad...
WOW! What a fantastic scene, Michael – beautiful capture. :)

Thank you Anne.

Fantastic capture!!!xx
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you Van & thanks for the favouriting. This photo has been surprisingly popular.
Glenn Alderson
Excellent colours & light…...........well done!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Glenn. I was hoping for some cloud cover to get a more even light. Considering that the rock was mostly in shadow, it turned out surprisingly well. This one is still at the top of the favourites list.
GerryMac
*outstanding” composition Michael! just stunning mate!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Gerry. The sunlight worked well to bring out the colours of the sapling in the foreground.
GerryMac
i have always wanted to visit this area…. even more so now!
Michael Matthews replied
It isn’t well signposted & there are no safety fences. Let me know if you need directions. I Googled it to get more info. The walk from the car park doesn’t hold many attractions. You can also cycle along the track if that is any help. It’s possible to jump (not step) onto the rock but that’s not something I would reccommend.
Michael Matthews replied
Hi Gerry. I visited the Rock again last weekend & the walking track is alive with hundreds of waratahs so, if you can make it, this is the best time of year to visit.
John Shortt-Smith
Hah! I must go down to the blue Mountains one day… Great shot
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks John. After looking through your gallery, I can see why this image fascinates you. Make sure you have a good look at the gap between the rock & the cliff. It is definitely “hanging”.
Arrowman
Great shot, looks like the Titanic !!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you. Let’s hope it doesn’t go down too soon.

Auntymazza
Sorry Michael, can I offer some excuses?
Michael Matthews replied
No apologies necessary sunshine. I think it’s called being human.
Rosalie Dale IPA
Excellent angle and lighting on this iconic rock! So well done!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you very much Rosalie. As much as I like the even colour of overcast days, the sun worked well for me here.

Stunning shot, looks like our Hawks Bill Crag!!
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you. I Googled your Hawks Bill Crag. It looks great … especially with the autumn colours. Check out the Daredevils photo on page 2. It shows the gap between the rock & the cliff !

redtree
Fantastic shot and place, I want to go. How high up is that ridge?
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks David. I think it is about 100 metres. If you go right to the edge you can probably see the bottom of the rock. Being into extreme outdoor activities, I’m sure you’d love this place.
Abseiling was banned a while back due to the danger & fragility of the rock.
I’m wondering what it looked like before the earth tremor of 89.
You might like to check out the other photos of this rock in my gallery to see the gap between the rock & the cliff.
The walk at Wentworth Falls also has a few sheer drops close to the edge of the track.
clizzio
You have captured this impressive spot on earth so beautifully.
Michael Matthews replied
Thank you & thanks for the favouriting. I love the sound of your hometown . Kunkletown. Will have to check out it’s history.

“Picinic at Hanging Rock”...Ahhh yes I remember, the strains off Miranda’s voice echo over the valley. Such a beautiful, gorgoues capture:=}:=}
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Ann-maree. A nice reminder of home perhaps. It’s not the Hanging Rock from the famous movie though. This rock is more for ladies in sensible shoes & hiking boots.
Brandie1
A suberb capture.
It looks huge.
It kind of has the shape of the bow of a great ship.
Or I may need new glasses.
