Grevillea macro
A tiny emerging grevillea seen next to a walking track at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains of Australia. This is the end section of a small flower.
For the benefit of the macro groups this section of the flower is about 2.5 cm long.
As mentioned in some of the comments below, I came across this flower because I followed the wrong track to the falls. Thank god for mistakes.
Also, the flower looks different in it’s final stage as the pink stems shoot upwards. It was great timing to catch it at this stage.
Thank you to the group organisers for featuring this in Flowers in Macro on October 18, 2008 & October 27, 2009, In The Pink on February 20, 2009, Grevilleas on June 12, 2009, Extreme Close-ups on Oct 24, 2009 & thank you to those in the Grevillea group who voted this image as the winner of the January 2009 Grevillea challenge.
Another win .. the Pretty in Pink challenge in the Australian Native Flower group in April 2009.
This image is special to me because it was the first of my photos to sell privately.

There’s no such thing as luck…;o)
Michael Matthews replied
Yes .. I agree. This was the saturday I woke feeling a bit crook (not well) but I had already decided that I was going to head up to the mountains, so decided to overcome the obstacles & head off. The result was that I got 2 of my best 3 three photos to date on that day. Special forces at work no doubt.
Christina Vasi...
ABSOLUTELY!!

Bruce Wallace ...
Great shot. Good depth of field. Do you know the species, assuming it is a species and not a hybrid. Is the whole conflorescence a toothbrush type or more globular. It does look like the toothbrush type.
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Wal. It is definitely a toothbrush type. Unfortunately I don’t know the species. Will do some research on it & see if I have images of the leaves somewhere.
Bruce Wallace ...
Will look myself
Bruce Wallace ...
It could be Grevillea acanthifolia. It is the right type of flower shape, similar colour and right locality.
Can’t think of anything else. Will let you know if I do. The leaves will be interesting.
Michael Matthews replied
I did a Google search & I think you are right there .. grevillea acanthifolia. Sorry for the delay.
Bruce Wallace ...
Congratulations Michael for winning the challenge.

Michael Matthews replied
Thank you Auntymazza. I’m glad you like it. I remember having my 5th birthday at an aunty’s place in Southport. I’m just about ready to add a 2 to that 5.
Auntymazza
Really, can you remember what part of Southport? we are down near the Broadwater
Michael Matthews replied
I could check with my mum because my memory isn’t that good. I remember it was number 1 in the street but they built a through road soon after. My uncle made pies on the residence & sold them around the streets.
Vicki Ferrari
Another amazing macro – the details in this shot are incredible! At first I thought that was the way the plant grew, with the pink ‘hook’ bits but upon closer observation, after reading your documentary, they are waiting to stand tall! Almost like they are bowing! Glad that you took the wrong track, Michael!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks again. It sometimes pays to not plan in too much detail. I think they look much better in the curly, developing stage.
Barbara Glatzeder
Lovely! really stands out against that nice dark background!
Michael Matthews replied
Thanks Barbara. Glad you like it.
Marda Bebb
crazy and gorgeous Michael. Wow!!!! I also grw up where there are “blue mountains”... in Walla Walla Washington! They grow nice big sweet onions there, and are getting a reputation for wine too. keep up the great work!!
