The Lion (Panthera leo) is the second largest of the living cats being narrowly beaten by the Tiger. Some male lions have been known to exceed 250kg. A Lion will live aproximately 10-14 years in the wild and will live up to 20 years in captivity.
10,000 years ago the Lion was one of the most widespread land mammals but its present day conservation status is now ‘Vulnerable’ with only an estimated 16,500 individuals living in the wild. These remaining Lions are very widespread resulting in inbreeding and unsuccessful matings. The complete reason to the Lions population decline is not fully understood but habitat loss and human conflict is currently the greatest concern.
