Posto 6, Copacobana beach by Maggie Hegarty

This is the strip where the locals take their exercising very seriously. There are also sand sculptors at work and many restaurants where you can buy anything from an icecream to a meal. At weekends half the road is closed for pedestrians and walkers.

I always wanted to be an architect, but instead did several art degrees, taught in schools and universities around the world and retired a few years ago from the University of Melbourne where I was Head of Photography. My photographs are of things that interest me. My real love was medium format, black and white photography, but I have come to love my digital camera and the power of colour.

The walkers definitely look serious, striding out at (my) Peter’s pace … I would leave him to his walk and head off to watch the sand sculptors. It must get quite crowded on weekends ….

  • Hi Trish. The Brazilian government encourage all this walking, including people with dogs, in the interest of people staying healthy. People can also play volleyball on the beach. We could learn a lot from them.
