New York is a ‘must see’ destination. Take a helicopter flight that passes Ellis island, circles the Statue of Liberty and then flies over the streets of Manhattan. A wonderful way to appreciate the layout of this fabulous city.

Taken from a helicopter. Pentax SLR. Kodak Gold 200 ASA film.
Featured in the Alphabet Soup group 10/10/10.

Top Ten in the Skyscrapers Avatar challenge in the Skyscrapers group, 13/2/13.

I always wanted to be an architect, but instead did several art degrees, taught in schools and universities around the world and retired a few years ago from the University of Melbourne where I was Head of Photography. My photographs are of things that interest me. My real love was medium format, black and white photography, but I have come to love my digital camera and the power of colour.

A much photographed location, and yet it caught my eye. Must be an excellent photographer behind the lens – presumably not much time to think and compose if taken from a helicopter! An excellent shot, with a nice composition of buildings and contrasts.

Thank you for your lovely comments. You are correct, a helicoptor shudders more than I realised and I had to photograph through glass. The pilot also took delight in suddenly swerving so that we were on a 45 degree angle! So I was pleased to get a few good shots. Wonderful experience though.

It’s funny that all the buildings look around the same colour! I’d love to visit it one day!

  • Thank you very much for the feature, I think the sameness is due to so much glass! A very exciting city though.

I could do magic with these kinda pictures; look at my portfolio!
    Great shot!

  • Thank you. I admire what you do but I had imagined that you would start with an image that was not as busy as The Big Apple.

Very nice capture! And I love the lighting! The glass may have even in fact made it more interesting by giving the image an overall consistent tone.

  • Thank you for your lovely comments Mui-Ling.
