Cougar, one of the most maligned carnivores in North America. Like the grizzly bear and timberwolf, these large carnivores need lots of space to live, and when they go after livestock it is because they either are sick and malnourished from overpopulation as a result of human habitat destruction, or from a lack of natural prey also a direct result of human encroachment upon their native habitat. A big cat is going to do what evolution created a big cat to do and that is hunt and kill. As they say in sports, don’t hate the player (i.e. cougar), hate the game (i.e. habitat destruction)!

Thank you all for looking, to me there is really nothing more hypnotic than the eyes of a wild cat, regardless of size. There is a wildness and a hidden intensity that is so palpable, it is different than that of a bear or a wolf or any other family of Carnivora.

    Wonderful shot, Mundy!

We have a very healthy cougar population on the ranch. They compete with the coyotes and bobcats for deer, rabbits and wild turkeys. Occasionally, they will take a calf from my cousin’s beef cattle. Fortunately, the cougars don’t come too close to headquarters!

I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful portrait of an animal I admire and care for. Your comments about their wildly inaccurate depiction in folklore is so right on. When I lived in Montana, on Swan Lake, we were once visited by a pair (yes a pair) of cougars who got their drink of water from the lake and moved back into the trees where they disappeared. All of our neighbors were terrified and insisted that baby horses (we had just had a colt born) were cougars’ favorite food, which is hogwash. In Oregon an annual event is to try to reinstate the law allowing hunting cougars with dogs, because they’re “killing all the wildlife and a danger to people.” Your other art piece, “Extinction is Forever” fits well here.
....Sorry, guess I got on my soapbox here. But I love these animals and fear they’ll be gone in fifty years.

Such beautiful creatures. I use to love lying in bed listening to them out in the desert at night. Now thanks to greed and cookie cutter homes, people have moved in and destroyed the desert, which is the animals home. Makes me mad and sad at once. Beautiful images.

Wow, you can feel the emotions of the cougar…. and I wholeheartedly agree with you, even though I’ve never seen a real Cougar and I live in the UK. One of the most beautiful animal photographs I’ve ever seen.

Absolutely gorgeous. A fantastic portrait of such an amazing creature. I would love to see a couger in their natural habitat one day. So sad that they have such a bad reputation. I’ve read that they are a sign of a healthy ecosystem. If the ecosystem can support cougers then everything else is healthy.
