Mayfly I

A member of the insect Family Ephemeridae, this is the largest of all North American mayflies. It is commonly found on slow moving rivers and stillwaters across North America.

Taken in Tryon, North Carolina.

  • (He) stretched out his hand desperately as if to snatch only a wisp of air, to save a fragment of the spot that she had made lovely for him. But it was all going by too fast…and he knew that he had lost that part of it, the freshest and the best, forever.*

Interesting to just focus on the head of this beautiful creature.

  • Mundy Hackett replied

Jim you know I was shooting handheld with no flash and no tripod. So I really had little choice, and I personally love these sorts of macro images but I know some folks really prefer an insect to be tack sharp in focus on all parts of the body. Just different approaches, thank you for commenting my dear friend.

I cannot stand these annoying creatures but this is a great photo! I spent a little time on the Mississippi. Woke up one more with an infestation of these buggers all over my tent. Between them and the mosquitoes…They drove me nuts!!

    Great focus…excellent work!

Great shot. I really like that the head is the only part in focus – makes the image different and thus more intersting than the standard fully focussed insect pics. Almost looks like you used a tilt & shift lens (though i know you didnt). A new and fresh take on the mayfly! Thanks. Alex
