Experimenting with colored pencil on bogus rough sketch paper.
I think I would put a wash or pastel down in the dark areas first, next time. I don’t like how colored pencil leaves the little white holes in the dark areas.
I sketched this from work by myoriginalsin Please look through all her fantastic work.

Beautiful, Michael…just a thought…you can put a top layer with white and there will not be any white holes in the dark. It will blend it all together. Sometimes, I add many underlayers and then finish it off with a heavy blending layer of white. Some people choose to leave the grainy appearance. Either way, it is beautiful. Just my humble input. Your work is beautiful!!

I glad you mentioned that. A lot of people are afraid to use white as a blender. It works really well. I was afraid to lose the grainy feel of everything. I guess, there different techniques for different circumstances. Thanks Catherine!

Great! Those little white holes actually look good here, but I know what you mean. I often use watercolour or watered down acrylic as a base before doing a dark area in coloured pencil.
Michael Scholl replied
Thanks Dave or BLYTHART. I love that we’re talking techniques here. That’s what this piece was all about for me. Experimenting on how to work on this paper. I actually sketched it out with a white pencil and just kept going from the

Lovely image, Michael. I had exactly that with the pastel pencils on watercolour paper, too. Drove me half mad, those little white holes – likewise, I didn’t want to lose the grainy feel. Although I agree with Catherine on white as a blender, I’m going to try the wash under first. (I am too impatient for many many layers, haha)
Michael Scholl replied
How did I miss this? There are so many ways to handle it. It depends on the result you want. It starts with paper color, texture and thickness, whether to use soft or hard pencils and how you want the final piece to look. Experimenting is fun with this medium. Keep me posted with your results, Barbara.
