Background to the Frankston Shoot.

I’ve been asked if the photos are HDR a couple times now, so I thought I’d share the same info here just in case anyone else wants to know.

To answer the question, it’s not a HDR, although I have nothing against using HDR when it’s needed.

I simply took a single exposure at the correct timing and metered for the highlights, which was in this case, the sunset. With some standard editing for contrasts in Lightroom, followed by Photoshop, I came up with the end result.

Here’s some visual proof of before and after in Lightroom, and as you can see, the Nikon D3x has some amazing dynamic range (I’m sure it’s the greatest DR of all the current cameras).

Photos from Vietnam

Just a selection of pics from my 4 week trip to Vietnam – I wasn’t too trigger happy, much so less than I thought I would be. I took about 500 odd and culled it down to about 200.

Here’s a selection of portraits and landscapes that I liked the best.

My new lens... Nikon 200mm F2

I’ve been eying this lens for some time now.. some would say drool over it as it’s perhaps Nikon’s best ever lens made. Then last week with Nikon’s imminent price rise along with some extras cash I’ve made over the last wedding season, I thought it was time to purchase it.

Anyway, I went downstairs to grab some dinner just then and I thought I’d bring it along to take a few shots. Fired off about a dozen shots… and 1st impressions are… OMFG I’m really in love with this lens. The AF is very noticeably quicker than the 70-200 and literally snaps in like the 24-70 does. Images are amazingly sharp wide open and because I’m shooting at F2 my ISO hovers around 800-1200 when they used to be 1600-3200 with the 70-200 – amazing stuf…

A Bali wedding

I’ve been so busy that I don’t get many chances to just play around on the net anymore. I’ve got 4 weddings to edit before my December, month long trip to Vietnam.

Below are a few images from a Bali wedding I photographed last month.

TTD @ Ocean Reef in Perth

This is a trash the dress I did on the weekend in Perth. It was COLD so I tried my best to shoot as quick as possible. The couple were compliant and great to work with and I got some cool shots :)

We went a tad bit early as I thought the shoot would go longer, but the cold hastened things a little.

RB Photowalk organised by Adrian

After missing a few RB meets, either being too busy or too sleepy to get out of bed, I managed to go along to today’s one. Albeit an hour late, I managed to get there before we all moved along from the meet point.

I didn’t take many [different] pics but these are mine for the day. I don’t shoot macro, so I sorta stuck with portraits.

3 I walked over to ask this guy for a photo as I saw him doing jumps and stuff. I was in for a huge surprise when it turned out that I knew him and he once worked for me many years ago in Perth. Small world this is.

6 Here, I stopped down background light, and then added my own strobes (back and front – thanks Chris). Sorta like a portable studio out in the middle of the day :)

Erin & Mick

I photographed this wedding last Saturday of Erin & Mick. Caroline Gorka followed me around for the day, but unfortunately I haven’t had the time to look at her photos yet. I don’t usually edit photos this quickly for a wedding, but I’ve got to clear my backlog as I’m leaving for a wedding in Bali next week.. YAY!

Anyway…Erin and Mick were a great couple, easy to get along with and very fun loving. I tried my best to bring these qualities in them out in the photos. The location of the wedding was the zoo, so we got to wander around the zoo all by ourselves for about 35min (yep, another rushed location shoot) before ending up at a really really lovely Japanese themed cherry blossom garden. We timed it right so that the lighting from the setting sun was int…
