Artist's Description

This photo was taken shortly after my Mom and Dad were married. It looks like Mom is wearing some sort of Fur Coat here. It was taken from a very old and worn snapshot.

My Mother was an very neat housekeeper. The thing that amazed me most is she never seemed to work hard at it. Monday was laundry , Tues, Ironing, etc………. Our house was always as neat as a pin. Mom did all her housework early in the morning and the afternoon was her’s to do as she wished. She belonged to political orginazations, and worked endlessly for charity.

At this time Dad was working 3 jobs! Fireman, apartments house superindentent and did small repair jobs in other people’s homes. He was determined to own his own home once again. When I was 4, we moved into our own 3 bedroom home on Academy Street in South Orange. I remember they paid $6,200. for the house. My Dad totally gutted the house, putting in new electric, plumbing and even took down walls and enlarged rooms.

My Dad had given his first wife, Mary, his ancestral home in South Orange as part of their divorce. She really took him to the cleaners! I guess he wanted the divorce badly. But, it was only a temporary set back for him.
