This is my mother’s, Elizabeth Smart’s, First Grade Class photo! Taken at Fielding School, Maplewood, New Jersey around 1922
Mom is in the second (from the bottom) row – 5th child in from the RIGHT.
My “Aunt Winnie” (who really was not blood relations but my Mom’s life long best friend"), is in the 4th (top) row – 2nd from the LEFT. Ha ha, see Aunt Winnie’s hair bow! It’s almost bigger than her head!
My Mother and Winnie met in Kindergarden and were friends throughout their school years, both worked in New York City in their 20’s and double dated frequently in those years. They were great mischeif makers and did things that kids today surely cannot do. Winnie was an accomplished piano player and could play songs by “ear”. Aunt Winnie’s family was quite weatthy and my Mother enjoyed many things with Winnie that she otherwise would never been able to afford. They remained best friends until Winnie died of cancer when she was 60. My Mom moved into Winnies home and stayed with her for the last 3 months of her life. How many have friends like that?
