Here is my Grandpa. He is my Grandchildrens Great, Great Grandfather!
John Stuart Smart was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was one of the younger sons in the Smart Family. There were 8 children in all. His family owned a Lace Shop in Dublin, but he lived on the family pony farm outside Dublin. When his father passed away, my Grandpa was way down on the list to inherit. As, was the custom….most everything was passed to the oldest sons. Knowing that the pony farm would not support the entire growing family, my Grandpa set off for New York City, USA! He landed in Ellis Island along with thousands of other Irish Emigrants. He was extremely poor. His first job was as a runner for Western Union. My Mother has told me that he would put newspaper in bottom of his shoes to cover the holes in the soles. After several years in approximately 1909 he was able to get a job as a plumbing sales man for Kohler Plumbing in New York City. It is there he met my Grandmother………..but that is a continuing story.
