Melissa Vowell

Another quick update..

Well finally as you were informed I got my 5 year UK Visa and I have now booked all my flights! I leave Brisbane on July 23rd and I go to Sydney. I leave Sydney on July 25th for London. So I am just chilling in Sydney for a day and 2 nights to try and detach myself from family and friends before I leave the country altogether.

If anyone has any tips on how to deal with the complete whirlwind of emotion I’m going through right now, throw them at me.

I feel like I don’t even remember who I am. Excitement, nerves and despair all at once.

You will be fine Mel…just go with it. Oh I so know that feeling of excitement..leaving here to travel overseas. Just know this is all happening…because it’s meant too :)

at least they still speak english!! I went to spain for a while and I basically knew how to ask for beer and say thank you. You’ll be fine. The biggest part that helped me is try to find friends and stay busy, then you’ll never think of home.

You’re gonna be fine. Once you’re there, you’ll be so busy you’ll forget all about everyone here. Except for me. Because I’m so damn awesome.

    Poor Mella =(
Hmm… maybe go out and try something new? That way I guess you would just have your mind set on your own enjoyment, er, providing you do like this new activity/food/etc. =S

    Hey Mel,

I hate to say it – but give it time….I’m not sure there is a way to deal with the myriad of emotions you are feeling….they will pass and you will be more than fine….
Sorry, I’m no help at all…….
But man, I’m so excited for you….
    XOXOXO

I did the exact same thing that time last year… no tips.. there is no way to cope, you’ll miss everyone like crazy, especially at the 4 months mark for some reason, but keep busy, it always helps. And Australia will always be there… the weather over here is picking up (very slowly) it’s just like living in Melbourne – but the football fans are crazier. enjoy!

  • Melissa Vowell replied

wow, you did it too? We’re crazy :P

I am looking forward to it, i love the weather, and the crazy football fans too lol

Mel, moving away from home is never easy, big deep breath’s and make sure you can get free international calls. Jump into life with both feet and enjoy everything. You will still think of home (lots) but hopefully your fella and his family will be a fantastic surrogate. if that doesn’t work then there’s always alcohol ;-)

Moving far far away can be so very frightening before the fact, but do not despair. And don’t disconnect from your friends and loved ones – I’ve found that transitions like this can be easier if I keep all of my home tucked away with me in my heart and carried along with me. Totems, memories, crystallized snapshots of the life that you made – whatever you want to call them – make the change a bit more bearable.

Ayez une aventure grande et wonderous !
