This is Keevil’s Lake, a salt lake near Quairading, which is subject to seasonal fluctuations in water levels. In the past locals used to water ski on it, but these days it’s mainly dry. It forms part of a zone of ancient drainage, and these salt lake chains now only function in very wet years. source
More about dryland salinity here
For a friend of mine, Jo, who I’ve known since uni days……so she can have a bit of Australia in The Hague.

Melissa, this is outstanding! love it!
thanks so much Adrian – really appreciate it! This is a bit different to what I’d normally photograph (mainly because there’s just no water or anything around Kalgoorlie!), so I’m grateful for the kind words.

simply stunning, beautiful sunset (or was it sunrise?) and those reflection on the water are just amazing
Thanks again Shane – it was sunset. I’m not really a sunrise person, at least not in winter :)

Oh this is wonderful love the slither of orange on the horizon and the stark trees sticking up out of the salt lake. wonderful capture. Did you do any processing on this just love the feel of the image
thank you Karen – I processed it in Photomatix Light, which is something new for me. I didn’t really know what I was doing lol! I just used the one RAW image and moved the sliders around until I liked what I saw – so it’s tonemapped, as I have recently learned :)

Sad, beautiful and dramatic all at once.
thanks Lou – it’s a pretty sad stretch of road, this one. Dead trees, saline wasteland, and old drums of who knows what dumped in dried-out dams. It’s near Matt’s parents’ place. I get mad every time we drive past it. I don’t know how people can just dump stuff like that.
