Laneways & Back Alleys by Melissa Drummond

I miss a lot of things about Victoria, and Melbourne especially. I was a student at RMIT for years – too many, actually, but my academic record is a story for another time – and I used to love wandering around the city, exploring the laneways and alleys, the smell of coffee wafting from tiny cafes, and where you’d stare through the window of gourmet chocolate and designer shoe shops that were way out of a student’s reach.

Those were the days.

I don’t regret spending the time wandering instead of in a lecture theatre.

Photo taken in January 2009, on a rare visit home.
It took me until now to notice the woman (seated) who looks like she’s pointing with her fork (ha! how rude!), and her companion who looks like he’s copping a bit of an ear bashing. They seem to be drawing the attention of the lady walking by.

Born in Victoria, now living in the outback of Western Australia, I love nature, music, and photography. I’m passionate about our environment, sustainability, and documenting the impact we’ve had on the planet.

I shoot both digital and film, and have a quirky collection of toy and vintage cameras that are a lot of fun to experiment with.

love the shot and your commentry Mel.
love thinking about what that couple are sayin to each other. Its like that Paul Kelly song – “they thought i was asleep”. Everytime i hear that song, Brad & I talk about what his parents might have been saying, and come up with a different theory each time….

  • Hey Lis, thanks mate! I had to google the lyrics to that song, but I see what you mean. God, it even reminded me of when I was a kid and you pretend to be asleep, and maybe hear stuff you don’t want to (happened a bit, sadly)……but that couple, I wonder if she really is pissed off. You could make up all sorts of stuff :)

Wonderful image Mel. Quite draws one in. If I show this to Ed he will be off in reminiscence……

  • Is Ed a Melbournian? I reminisce a bit too – as if you couldn’t tell!! It’s such a contrast to Kalgoorlie, that’s for sure!

Hi Melissa, I walked down here on Anzac weekend. Love the lighting you have captured here. I was born in Melbourne but haven’t spent much time there for ages. Was good to go back again and am encouraged to make the short trip down from Sydney again soon. There is so much to photograph!!

  • Hi Ian, thanks! I’ve lived in WA for 12 years but originally from Melbourne, and this photo was taken on a short trip home. I look at the photos now and think about what I’d do differently if I was there, and if I had more time – the possibilities are endless!

This is a great image, Melissa. i really love the story in the shadows. Will try and get a look down this way when I’m in Melbourne next (next week potentially).

  • Hey Sandy – I owe you a BIG thanks for buying a card!! So, THANK YOU :) I’m stoked! Glad you like the photo.

I’ve just had a look on Google Maps, and this is Block Place, which runs off the Block Arcade, and is another great spot for photos. If you get down there next week, I hope you have a great time! Look forward to seeing some pics, and thanks again :)

Great capture Melissa, I miss the lanes of Melbourne too, where you can lose yourself in the human traffic, love searching the details and the stories in this too
    Jus

  • Hi Jus, thanks for the kind words, glad you like it! And I know what you mean about Melbourne. There’s so much to look at and explore. Even watching the people go by is fascinating. Fingers crossed I’ll get back there again soon!

Wonderful colour and shot Melissa, I love Melbourne and all its laneways, love the people aspect to this too :))

  • I’m going to have to think of some more imaginative ways to thank you Trish – I’m so blown away by all the lovely words! It really means a lot :) And I’m with you – I love the laneways too. You could get lost wandering them all – but lots of great little shops to discover!
