When I was a kid, the first one to see a VW Beetle belted the other – usually an unsuspecting sibling in the back seat of the car – and yelled “punch buggy” and then whatever colour that Beetle was. Depending on how much pain you wanted to inflict, this sometimes applied to Kombi sightings too.

This VW was found lying derelict in a place called Kookynie, an old gold-mining ghost town in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia. I love how nature is taking it back, with the Cotton Bush growing out from, and around it. “Punch Buggy Busted” just seemed to fit……..

Born in Victoria, now living in the outback of Western Australia, I love nature, music, and photography. I’m passionate about our environment, sustainability, and documenting the impact we’ve had on the planet.

I shoot both digital and film, and have a quirky collection of toy and vintage cameras that are a lot of fun to experiment with.

Lovely clarity. I like the sky in the spaces left by the windows. Poor wee beetle! My first car was a beetle, as was my husband’s first car…and my Dads!

  • Thanks Lou – lucky you…..mine was a baby poo brown Corona stationwagon! I liked the sky through the windows too – I’ve got a black and white version somewhere, a close-up of the inside that I might have to have a hunt around for!

  • Isn’t it? There’s so many car bodies around here, in all sorts of strange places – like they just stopped and that was that.

Who knows, i’m sure there is some kind of grand narration that tells the life and abandonment of this car. An epic tale.
