A tutorial on how I convert my colour to B&W...
A few people have asked so I thought what the heck…I’ll make a tutorial about it.
Lemme know what you think…
Did I just write the word heck??

I feel a bit dumb but i still havent found out how to open my raw images in Photoshop. So that is where I have to start. I had it explained to me but it didnt make any sense. Maybe my brain is on the wrong side!!
Melinda Kerr replied
Hmm odd. I just click on the raw file and it automatically opens in Adobe Camera Raw (which is like an off shoot of Photoshop)...maybe journal it and see if you get and answer?
Richard Veal
Many thanks for doing this Mel.
A great help.
Melinda Kerr replied
Cheers Richard-glad you got something out of it.

Great tutorial Melinda. It’s always helpful to see how others process their images.
Steve Axford
They look a bit funny to me, Mel. What’s wrong with the channel mixer?
Melinda Kerr replied
I reckon RAW does it better Steve because it gives you better blacks. For me the channel mixer is a bit murky. They aren’t meant to be realistic.
Steve Axford
I guess I like colour too much – I almost never convert to B&W – but then I don’t have many pigmy photos. I tend to process less nowdays and rely more on what comes out of the camera. All a bit odd.
Melinda Kerr replied
Oh you old traditionalist you Steve :)
Steve Axford
Too much effort otherwise. Anyway, the colours come up in camera if you get the lighting right, I suspect the B&W does to.
Steve Axford
Though perhaps the pigmies didn’t hang around in the right light?
Melinda Kerr replied
Most inconsiderate of them

Thanks Mel – at last a tutorial that shows many of the functions in the RAW converter thus speeding up the whole process.
Will put a link to this from Photography 101 Tutorials

No worries jim

I dont use either of these programs.
But I still really enjoyed watching and listening to what you were doing and why.
Hopefully I can work out how to convert some of that info into the programs I use.Well done Melinda, great stuff.
Jared Revell
Great tutorial Melinda, thanks for sharing.
Anne O'Connor
thanks so much Melinda. I have learnt heaps. I generally use channels, but I think this is a lot better.

This is gold. Just as gold as you getting a youtube clip in your journal.
Thanks for sharing.

I had a look at your utube thingy. Good stuff. Have you tried CaptureOne? Or even some of the fancy HDR programs? They allow you lots of space to change the higlights or too dark areas.

Now I did not know about that little trick with masking slider in Camera Raw sharpening. Sweet.

Well explained Melinda – but you make me feel like a rank amature…
Melinda Kerr replied
Haha nah Stephen…it’s just evidence of me spending too much time in front of the computer!! Actually I’m getting seriously in to developing tutorials…watch this space :)

Brilliant job.. I would have liked to have heard what you were about to click on to automatically select around the eyes.. I thought was pretty neat how it automatically had traced them.. Overall a wonderful tutorial! Praises to you!
