'Pink Hat,' Heal Africa Hospital, Democratic Republic of Congo
As with ‘Burberry girl’ looks can be deceiving. Beauty in poverty hits you between the eyes in Africa. This was taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you have seen the film ‘Blood Diamond’ then you will have a good understanding of what it’s like in D.R. Congo. The film was sadly accurate.

Hi Melinda, what a doll!
Beautifully moving portrait.
I saw the movie and as a movie it was unusual in being enlightening although disturbing.
The sad thing is even with the changes it will continue, like oil diamonds are a prized commodity. We have summits and pat ourselves on the back but still 6000 a day die of aids.
Sorry Melinda, didn’t want to take away from your beautiful work;)

A wonderful image. I I have not seen the movie, but have met people from South Africa that talked about the poverty in the shanty towns. The thing that struck home to me was when they talked of these people still having a dignity and amongst the squaller still managed to make sure there kids had clean clothes for school. It is far too easy to see them as something different to us because they are poor, it is a lot harder and confronting to think that they are the same as us humans. I think this is confronting as it makes me think that under different circumstances I could be in the situation they are in. Sorry for the lengthy comment, but your image and comment has moved me and reminded me how lucky I am. Thank you.

Hi David, thank you so much. Your comment wasn’t too long. It’s spot on and really appreciated. You are absolutely right. It’s so easy to consider poor people different to us-they are exactly the same and that’s the thing that confronts you. Your mates from South Africa are right. And so are you.

I’ve met a few African kids in my ‘home town’. I love how they dress their kids up like princesses for special occaisions
> I went with them to a Wiggles concert (should I clarify and say I was helping my mum, who works w refugees?). The little girls looked so beautiful-maybe I’ll have to put a pic online too!

recieved my order of cards from redbubble and just wanted to let you know how beautiful this one looks – the quality of both the card and the image is brilliant! couldn’t be happier…

Nicole that’s awesome. I didn’t realise it was you who’d bought them. Thank you so so much x

There is beauty everywhere .. Even if we choose to close our doors in our minds. Most who have a soft warm bed are content with not being confused with the facts. If everyone did a small fraction of something this world would grow to be like heaven. Great capture Melinda..

aw :) your shots leave me without words.

This is so surreal! I had a little hat like this when I was a kid!!! Love this image and because I also live in Africa I know the poverty around us.
