'Street kid' Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo
Officially the civil war has ended in Congo. Sadly, in reality, this is untrue. Militias ravage villages, raping women, abducting young men for combat, dismembering the population and creating massive displacement. Everyday. Those who make it to Goma live amongst the lava infused earth, a result of a massive eruption two years ago. Water and food are scarce, homes are built of mud or flattened food tins. These kids live and play amongst trucks half swallowed by lava.

Melinda, I invite you to look at my journal and profile – I have written entries about art competitions, which you may or may not know about – several have the theme of poverty.
And also invite you to look at the journal entry (short history) of my friend, “Omary”http://www.redbubble.com/people/OmarySalum who was a street kid in Tanzania and is now in detention here in Sydney. Different, but connected!

Dunno why but for some reason this reminds me of Bresson’s Rue Mouffetard Paris. Just something about this face that reminded me of the cheeky kid with the bottle. Lovely capture….............A light of joy amongst so much despair

Melinda thank you for sharing is wonderful moment that you have captured. I love both boys expressions but the little hand coming up behind the cheeky fella in the front grabs my attention and speaks very much to me – I think it is hope!! blessings Julie
