I drew this eye from memory of a photo I took of an autistic student of mine, a few years ago. The child stared right into the lense and when the photo was printed, there appeared to be a white dove flying across the pupil.
I was amazed by this as it symbolised Autism to me.
The eye is our window to the soul. The white bird, symbolising Autism, is trapped within. It is still beautiful and peaceful but finds our world difficult and confusing and sees it as if behind a window looking out.
I added the rainbow to remind us that although often in their own world, they still see and feel the many colours of our world and often their senses are much more vivid and alive than ours.
We need to have this understanding, to be able to relate to a person with Autism…..
