Ok, so here’s the thing. I’ve been competing at a site called Digital Image Cafe for about 15 months now, and in the course of that time I’ve won a few prizes.
I’ve got two boxes here with PC versions of Corel Paint Shop Pro PHOTO XI ....and can’t actually spare the space or ram on my computer to run it. Plus, my husband has this bad habit of throwing things out that are sitting around gathering dust….lucky I’m still here, actually! I’d hate for them to be wasted.
Here’s what I propose:
If anyone here wants to have one of these, I’ll give them both away…..post a photo here to prove how much you need it…..I’ll ask some of my friends to help me judge.
- The photos have to be loaded into Redbubble and for sale. To link it to here, go to the photo you want to share, right click on it, then go to properties. Drag your mouse over the url where it says Location, and make sure you get it all, including the ending extension, in most cases jpg, then add an exclamation mark at the start and the end !
Paste that into the comment, and you should see your photo.
- Competition will end on Feb 29, 7pm Eastern STANDARD time – AUS, (not daylight saving time) and I’ll post them anywhere in the world, surface mail….no correspondence will be entered into, so don’t bmail me about this, put all your questions and photos here, please.
- I’m looking for creativity, but you also need to show that you don’t have a decent editing program….which is why you need this one.
Feel free to tell all your friends

Question…. does this software ork on macs or only pcs?
micmac, 6 months ago
Cool ,I sure need it …That’s a beautiful and original idea …
Sharon Hammond, 6 months ago
I don’t need it but I’m up for helping you judge
Suni Pruett, 6 months ago
Oh.. I have photoshop…and although I would love it… I know that there are some others who deserve it so much more.. This is a wonderful idea!!
John Conway, 6 months ago
a generous gesture
Judith Oppenhe..., 6 months ago
just logging in to say that’s a wonderful idea … i have photoshop, one day i’ll figure out how to use more than .0002% of it, but i think its a wonderful thing you’re doing.
Adrian Rachele, 6 months ago
Thats nice of you Mel. Already have PS3 and LR.
I can say Paint Shop Pro that it is a good program. Very user friendly. I have used it at work for Web development. That said I do not know how similar Photo XI version is.
Paul Thompson, 6 months ago
Well done Mel. Very generous. Lucky for whoever wins them.
Shanina Conway, 6 months ago
Oh cool Mel and very generous!
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Robin, both these are PC versions….sorry, I’ll put that in the text. I believe you can run PC proggies on mac now can’t you?
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Thanks Shazza, you’re in :)
mlgkats, 6 months ago
i am in the same situation i have a mac as robin
Steven Lippis, 6 months ago
Paint Shop doesn’t come in a mac version, to run it you’d need to have Leopard and dual install windows, or for an earlier OS you’d need to download boot camp and do the same. I’d not recommend running a power hungry program like an image editor in an emulator, that’d be painful!
Very generous, Mel. PSP is a great program, I found it did some things a lot better than photoshop, and it’s easier to use. Less bells and whistles perhaps, but I bet 99% of people don’t use 99% of photoshop’s capabilities anyhow! (I enjoy making up statistics)
mlgkats, 6 months ago
doesn’t mean i can’t go for you never know when you’ll get a pc
David Haviland, 6 months ago
Very generous, but don’t need it, will be interesting to see who pops up with a need. Would be happy to help judge too if you need a hand.
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Thanks for that info Steven, I have heard its as good as or even better than photoshop for some things, and yes, very few people use the full capabilities of any of the programs they use.
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Thanks David! You’re in!

What a kind person you are Mel …
My mum uses it most of the time (despite my best efforts to convert her) and sings it’s praises.
I definitely don’t NEED it …. and don’t feel qualified to judge, so I shall once again applaud your gesture Mel and sit back and wait to congratulate the winners!! :)
Curtiss Simpson, 6 months ago
I have it but don’t use it, but very generous offer of you to make.

You certainly deserve a gold star!
FOR ALL YOU MACOPHILES (of which I am one)
Yes – certain macs can run PC programmes
They need to be the latest versions with an Intel chip (eg latest iMacs, MacBookPro, MacBook, MacPro etc)
They will need to be booted up with “Bootcamp” to run with installed windows (eg would recommend XP vs VISTA due to difficulty with drivers etc especially with printers and scanners)
OR concurrently with a programme called parallels http://www.parallels.com/en/landingpage/dskd10_4/?gclid=CMWVjpCx6JACFQUBiQodgDEzQA)
Codeweavers “Crossover mac” doesn’t seem to support this programme at this stage…
For those with older macs using PowerPC chips – sorry!
:-)
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
I’m heading that way myself, I think Ashley…..thanks for the info.
Denzil, 6 months ago
Mel, this is a terrific thing you’re offering! I really need an editor, however a friend has offered Photoshop, with lessons, so I would feel greedy jumping onto this offer! Good on you for sharing your goodies! Can we all look at the submissions later??? And the winners? (I love a comp, even if I’m not in it lol)
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Any entries will be here for all to see, Denzil :)
Loredana Crupi, 6 months ago
Good onya Mel! Very generous….I have Adobe CS2 suite so won’t partake but am definitely interested to see what people come up with! :)
Alan Rodmell, 6 months ago
Oh bugger… then I suppose CS3 counts as a good editing program eh? Oh well – good luck to all who enter
Halcyon007, 6 months ago
What a fabulous idea and very generous of you Mel. Good luck to all of those that enter (as I actually have Paint Shop Pro XI myself – I shan’t be entering)
Christina Martin, 6 months ago
Mel this is very generous of you to think of us…Thanks! Sorry I need all the help I can get but i run a mac
lightsmith, 6 months ago
Glorious offer. I use PSP 9 and although I also have Photoshop (both versions) PSP gets it all done quicker, simpler, and (imho) better.
I’m moving to Mac soon but will be running either bootthingy or VMWARE – just so I can continue to use Paintshop Pro. If ONLY they’d get out a MAC version!
I wont enter :
a) because I probably couldnt win
b) because I don’t need XI (though I’d love it)
c) because there are lots out there who are getting by with good but more limited tools who deserve it more.
A wonderful gift for the new year – you’re great Mel.
Jocelyn Hyers, 6 months ago
Well I guess I will enter a photo .. can’t hurt .. at the very least it will get my poor pic some more attention .. it is so lonely at the bottom of the view count pile … LOL …
I think with the newer version of PSP I would be able to better enhance this image … thanks …

earthangel, 6 months ago
What happens when you don’t have the ability yet to upload photos or have photoshop – I’d dearly love it (and dream of it) but can’t afford it. :( If I could I’d upload lots!
Very generous of you
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
Write a story on why you can’t upload, earthangel, that might swing it in your favour :)

Are you wanting me to post my “best” photo that I can get from now till Feb. 29? What kind of picture are you looking for?
I only have the GIMP (it’s free) as I’m still a student and canot afford expensive software.
And I agree with previous commenters, this is very generous of you, I appreciate it!
Mel Brackstone, 6 months ago
I want you to post a photo, Isaac, that shows you’re creative.

hi mel, i’ve been working with a pretty basic camera and have managed to come up with some pretty decent images, but paintshop would come in pretty good to play around with the not so good ones.
