Yeah nice shot Mel :) Well exposed, good comp and colours, and a little doggy in the corner for good measure. He looks pretty lazy to me actually?

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

Thanks James, yeah, he wasn’t all that keen on moving too fast

  • timpollock

reminds me of some small Mexican towns I have visited – nothing moves fast. I like it.

A dog tale of sorts lol Well shot and I like the visual story telling of this shot, it’s great.
And funnily enough this is one shot where the powerlines add a great deal to the purpose of the story IMO….......typical small town, main street type scene, fantastic Mel.

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

Thanks Tim and Peter. Most of the buildings on that side of the road were boarded up….its definitely a typical small town!!

fascinating image mel. You make it seem like a ghost town and yet after a while I noticed that the place was so clean and tidy…. as if those who are left are clinging desperately to the glorious past.

    G’day Mel,
I find this to be a very interesting rural street scene indeed.
The sense of utter loneliness and isolation has been captured very well.
Your composition is good and well balanced although I would have preferred to see all of the dog’s shadow in shot with a little space to separate it from the edge of frame.
The lighting is typically harsh mid-afternoon sunlight and though you have exposed very well to prevent blow-outs, it has just as typically left its mark on this photograph. The effects are evidenced by the overall brightness which makes the image seem “flat” as there is an obvious loss of colour, contrast, tones, depth and definition. The effect even extends to a slight softness in the details.
Now don’t go wailing to the kitchen to ge a knife to cut your wrists. (Yet! ;) )
If you can get a copy of this into Photoshop CS, I have a recipe to bring this great photograph back to life and really make it “pop”.
It is a bit complicated and rather long to write down here so if you are interested send me an email at: dennisgay@optusnet.com.au and I will gladly give you the recipe. 8
    )
    God bless you and yours,
    Dennis

This is great Mel. The more I look…pooch is looking so forlorn. Looking after it shadow. Power lines, colour, setting all very cool. I agree with Paul – visual poetry

Wow freakin’ wee – this awesome Mel – just love it! I think it’s the definitive horizontal space you’ve managed to create. The way the dog is almost at right angles to the road, with a perfectly straight shadow. Also love the varying textures on the walls and fences which seem to really complement the colour palette. Love the position of the pole which makes for a wonderfully designed piece! Great, great work Mel. You gotta be super proud of this shot!

Love the colours and the composition. I think the only thing I would do would decrease the contrast and compensate with more saturation – it looks like there is some loss of definition in places. This may be due to the online pic being low res. Where was it taken??

  • Mel Brackstone
