What an artistic eye you have Mel! The colors and framing are perfect, let alone the subject matter! Pure visual poetry, love it! Straight to my favs!! :D
Mel Brackstone
Thank you, Paul!
paulym

John Hurle

Yeah nice shot Mel :) Well exposed, good comp and colours, and a little doggy in the corner for good measure. He looks pretty lazy to me actually?
Mel Brackstone
Thanks James, yeah, he wasn’t all that keen on moving too fast
timpollock
reminds me of some small Mexican towns I have visited – nothing moves fast. I like it.
Peter Marin
A dog tale of sorts lol Well shot and I like the visual story telling of this shot, it’s great.
And funnily enough this is one shot where the powerlines add a great deal to the purpose of the story IMO….......typical small town, main street type scene, fantastic Mel.
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Tim and Peter. Most of the buildings on that side of the road were boarded up….its definitely a typical small town!!
Janice Sheen
fascinating image mel. You make it seem like a ghost town and yet after a while I noticed that the place was so clean and tidy…. as if those who are left are clinging desperately to the glorious past.
Nicole Goggins
tells a gr8 story… nice one!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Janice, there are people there…..I’m sure :)
Mel Brackstone
Ta Nic :)
hugo
like it Mel, especially the Mediterranean colors which appear hot like I recon the day was judging by the dogs posture, great shot!!!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Hugo!
Dennis Gay
G’day Mel,
I find this to be a very interesting rural street scene indeed.
The sense of utter loneliness and isolation has been captured very well.
Your composition is good and well balanced although I would have preferred to see all of the dog’s shadow in shot with a little space to separate it from the edge of frame.
The lighting is typically harsh mid-afternoon sunlight and though you have exposed very well to prevent blow-outs, it has just as typically left its mark on this photograph. The effects are evidenced by the overall brightness which makes the image seem “flat” as there is an obvious loss of colour, contrast, tones, depth and definition. The effect even extends to a slight softness in the details.
Now don’t go wailing to the kitchen to ge a knife to cut your wrists. (Yet! ;
) ))If you can get a copy of this into Photoshop CS, I have a recipe to bring this great photograph back to life and really make it “pop”.
It is a bit complicated and rather long to write down here so if you are interested send me an email at: dennisgay@optusnet.com.au and I will gladly give you the recipe. 8
God bless you and yours,
Dennis
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Dennis, I deliberately dropped the contrast and colour.
Melody
whoa…Mel…..This is so simple but also eccentric somehow….I love it!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks so much Melody.
Dennis Gay
G’day again Mel,
Thanks for the clarification kiddo. (I still think it looks better with a more intense look. But that’s just me). 8-)

This is great Mel. I can sense the atmosphere. The dog looks like it could be a dingo.
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Dennis and Danielle….its a red cattle dog, just a little bleached out :)
Robert Knapman
This is great Mel. The more I look…pooch is looking so forlorn. Looking after it shadow. Power lines, colour, setting all very cool. I agree with Paul – visual poetry
K.D. Hemi
This is such a wonderful story telling image Mel… your work is so fantastically stimulating to view… :) im completely in awe!!!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Robert and Khemi!
Paul Vanzella
Wow freakin’ wee – this awesome Mel – just love it! I think it’s the definitive horizontal space you’ve managed to create. The way the dog is almost at right angles to the road, with a perfectly straight shadow. Also love the varying textures on the walls and fences which seem to really complement the colour palette. Love the position of the pole which makes for a wonderfully designed piece! Great, great work Mel. You gotta be super proud of this shot!
Michael Douglass
Love the symetry in this, well done.
Mel Brackstone
Thanks so much Paul and Kalb! Much appreciated!
Andy Smylie
A familiar story to many an outback town, I am sure. Desolate and lonely. Great shot Mel.
Lance Leopold
Love the comp and color Mel!!
Mel Brackstone
Thanks Andy and Lance :)
Ozcloggie
Makes me think of several places, in NSW, that I’ve passed through, trying to get somewher, at a reasonable hour. Great atmosphere here.
Jessica Tremp

ozczecho
Great shot…love the powelines dissecting the picture as well as the dog..the dog looks like its been there forever, something like the buildings in the bg…
Mel Brackstone
Thanks for your comment, Ozczecho!
Mardynn
Every emotional photography.
I think the dog makes it.
Keep up the good work.
shelagh1312
What a fabuous picture , amazing
Mel Brackstone
Thanks for your comments, Mardynn and Shelagh!
Kerry McFarland
Heart wrenching, and oh so good.
Ian Porter
Love the colours and the composition. I think the only thing I would do would decrease the contrast and compensate with more saturation – it looks like there is some loss of definition in places. This may be due to the online pic being low res. Where was it taken??
Mel Brackstone
Hi Ian, this was shot in Wilcannia
Benjamin Scheurer
there’s so much I love about this shot….so much to discover…fantastic!
Peacefulwarrior
Poor old Wilcannia….197 kilometres west of Broken Hill, both dying slowly. Great shot though!
rufflesal
This is awesome Mel…I love it…speaks volumes
Adrian Geronimo
what a lovely photo. the positioning of the subject with the low angle of view makes it very effective. cute dog.
