Red Dawn

Mel Brackstone

Red Dawn

Black glass magic – I had gone on this shoot with a bad attitude, expecting the sky to be bland and the day to be a waste of time, and therefore I set the camera on large jpg so I wouldn’t waste too much computer space….As it turned out, I’ve managed to drag out some amazing results.

This is another straight from the camera image, although I had to take it into PS to straighten the horizon….

Canon 5D Mk II, 16-35mm at 16mm, f/10, 90seconds, ISO 50, Hoya NDX400, Singh Ray 3 stop reverse grad, Lee 0.9 ND grad, tripod, cable release, lots of guessing….I should point out the red sky is enhanced by the Singh Ray filter, which seems to put a colour cast across the ND area when used in conjunction with the Lee filter….

Ah the guesswork, yes. I’ve thrown away the shutter speed chart for the Black Glass. It is rather challenging! Great result Mel!

  • Mel Brackstone replied

Simone has a chart that can be of some use, although it’s totally hopeless when you stack two filters…..lol

  • Peter Hill

    Peter Hill

Yep, that’s the chart (similar) I’ve chucked. I’ve never conformed nor liked the results in sticking to it.

  • Mel Brackstone replied

I tested it once, when the sky was bright, about 10am…then it was quite successful, but in low light, or with other filters….nup….lol!

    Garry Schlatter

Wow….straight out of the box is always best. Well done Mel, I am amazed how much patience you have to stack / hold all these filters considering the beach environment (salt spray and watching the waves). I experience the same, Lee and SinghRay as a combo add a colour cast.

  • Mel Brackstone replied

I don’t take so many risks as you do buddy…..lol! I can see through the black glass, but when you add the grads there’s no vision…but I’m happy with how they have been turning out.
