The Humanitarian

Mel Brackstone

The Humanitarian

Inspired by the song The Days Of Pearly Spencer which was based on the story of a homeless man in Ballymena who was befriended by David McWilliams. The song reflected the writer’s deep humanity and his empathy with those who live on the margins of society.

Many thanks to Gregoryno6 who reminded me of this song last year, it’s been whirling around in my head since then. Thanks also to my wonderful friend Paul who constantly inspires me.

i tried.. i really did. and mel (you and p and…), you do it so well, paul and others. these after effects on top of the photos.. they are just stunning. i am not a “realist” i am more like “clueless”, guppy swimming in a pool of, “i have no clue” or “how did they do that”, or”is it my crappy software (computer , camera, etc.)”.. you and p get it on the spot every time and i just look at them in awe.. as i have not a clue..—-c (for the clueless chappel)

Love it Mel, your work has so many facets to it …
I remember the song, though I had not heard it for years. I’m old enough to remember the pirate radio stations and the Governments desperate attempts to close them down, only because nobody was listening to the BBC any more and the establishment was outraged at the type of music being played. The BBC of course (eventually) fought back with the birth of Radio 1 and were forced to embrace the music. It was an exciting time for me and my generation.

  • Mel Brackstone replied

I recall hearing about the pirate radio stations when I was young, and they were saying how lucky we were in oz cos we were able to hear all these songs without any of those dramas….

I love all of your montages Mel and this is no exception! Wonderful old house with lots of character to use as your background and I love the position you used for your model (Paul). The open arms, palms up demonstrate the openess and willingness to embrace fellow man, that I think you wanted to impart. Not being familiar with this song, I had a listen and think you transmitted the concept visually exceedingly well.

I pride myself on my ability to usually express myself adequately with written words .. but I’m at a loss here and … just don’t want to add an innocuous ‘wow’ ... but … whether it’s the lack of coffee or my frequently addled brains or the impact of the power of this image … WOW!!! I listened to “Pearly” while viewing this and … though I sometimes add a musical link to my own work … I don’t think I’ve ever seen music and image so beautifully tied together!!!
