Thanks Michael, my shooting buddy won’t even consider going to the beach for a shoot unless there is a very good chance of clouds….it’s why I’m still here at the moment….cos the bom site wasn’t helpful enough….oh well, maybe tomorrow :)

Melinda Kerr
Wow Mel that’s incredible. It’s just tipped over 45.5 degrees here in Melbourne so it also looks cool!! Sorry to keep bugging you with questions…and let me know if you’d rather I bmailed them but you have 2 filters listed in the description…did you use two on this shot? I’m trying to learn :)
Mel Brackstone replied
I stack the filters when I need to block more light, but I suffer from vignetting if I put on more than two….so that’s my limit with 16mm focal length. The lee holder has room for 4, all up.
I don’t mind answering here, it’s all good.
Melinda Kerr
Cheers Mel that’s really helpful. I’ve heard Lee are the way to go…
Mel Brackstone replied
Cokin do a good enough job if you’re good with photoshop, and know how to remove the magenta colour cast. I bought P size Cokins when I started, but they also vignetted badly once I changed to a full frame camera. There are larger Cokins, but I decided to go the whole hog and switch to Lee. There’s absolutely no colour cast at all, and they live up to ever expectation I could possibly have, apart from cost…..but we can’t have everything!
Karin Taylor
i luv the greens subtley showing through
Matt Penfold
Absolutely spectacular Mel, it looks like Jesus could step out of the ocean any minute ;-) Will the Cokin P series stack without vignetting on an APSC size sensor camera? (Canon 450D)
Mel Brackstone replied
Thanks Matt, and the stacking depends on the lens. If you’re planning on using the 18-55 kit lens, it’ll be a nightmare with cokins because the front element turns around when focussing. Not sure about the 17-85, but you may suffer some vignetting at 17mm if you stack em too high…

Rain? What’s rain?
This is my kind of picture – stormy skies and stormy seas. Just beautiful!

You got some great shots out of this day… well worth waiting for! I love the colour in this and the contrast between the white water and dark water behind. Some great blues in there and the dark foreboding sky is fantastic.

Oh wow! the colours and the movement are gorgeous.
Robert Gingher
Lovely as always, Mel. Am always interested in the process (and post-process) here. Did you layer two or more exposures with the .6 & .9 ND grads for HDR? Photomatix or other HDR software? I found your landscape (seascape) entry very helpful and am trying to tone-up my efforts!
Mel Brackstone replied
Hi Bob, this is a single exposure, with two lee filters to knock back the light from the sky. I used redynamix to add a little contrast, but I always drop the opacity of that after doing the process on a separate layer. Other than that, it’s curves to add some extra pizzaz.

simply STUNNINGGGGGGGG…......LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robert Gingher
Thanks for the helpful tip, Mel. I usu. run into noise issues with plug-ins like redynamix and topaz but knocking back the opacity as you suggest might help here. Do you ever use noise-reduction software?
Mel Brackstone replied
I have done in the past, but since the great windoze reinstall of December 2008, I haven’t reinstalled my noise reduction program. I was using noiseware, and no doubt will again.
Another option that helps reduce noise is to make the duplicate layer luminosity blending mode after running redynamics…..and lowering opacity….it all helps to cut out the noisy bits…and if worse comes to worse, you can add a layer mask and mask out the really bad bits…
Noise reduction is also always added as a new layer, cut and pasted in….so I can do the same thing, reduce opacity….
I’m a layer freak :)
bensound
Beautiful shot Mel, such drama. The soft whitewash against the rocks is a wonderful contrast.
