Tank Trap #3

Tank Trap #3

Took this on Stockton Bight, a long series of sand dunes that stretch from Anna Bay to Newcastle. These traps were placed to protect Williamtown air base (I believe) during World War II. 26km or so of these, 2m high concrete reinforced pyramids, and now all you can find is this small group, situated in a sand blow. Even they come and go depending on the wind. We took a tour from Anna bay, to see the tank traps, tin city and the wreck of the Sygma(?) I think the tank traps were the highlight for me

Surreal yes, very nice and strange looking. If you hadnt told me what they were (thanks for the description) I would have never known and been wondering for the rest of my life what these strange structures were… :)

Not only a great picture but, how interesting! Having judged that area for the Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Beach Challenge twice, now, I am surprised that I knew nothing of this. (The wreck I’d been taken to, in the 70s.).

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

Thanks for your comment, Ozcloggie. I expect that you’ll have fun trying to find them. It is a very long length of beach and dune area, and even with google earth its very hard to find them. I found a GPS reading online for them once, but couldn’t see the traps when I followed the directions. The tour companies seem to know where they are though…..

Mel, you have a great gallery all over!
    And quite the talent…
Quite fascinating how something, that in itself is such a beautiful creation (the symmetry, the repetition and what you made out of it with lighting and composition), can in just a very different overall situation strike fear in ones heart…
Our world is a strange place, but you still manage to share its beauty! :D

Thanks also for your comments on my Pied Pipers :)

Mel, I have to ask; ‘Did you try this in B&W?’ It just begs for it! Genius composition and exposure. Really superb light, tones, and contrasts. Let me know if you trot this one out as a B&W. Great work! Cheers! Chris

  • Jonathan Dower

    Jonathan Dower

wow, amazing shadows, colours and composition.
The strangest thing about these is how they never had to stop a tank…
They become permanent statues to the people who fought to stop these having to be used, untouched…
