After the storm

Mel Brackstone

After the storm

Nick and I were hoping to catch up with Ken Wright for a shoot, but the weather wasn’t looking good. Ken decided to sleep in, but Nick and I drove down to the coast anyway. Sat in the car while it rained and waited, and waited….then walked down to the rocks after dawn, with umbrellas….and waited some more….eventually I weakened and asked for the keys so I could start shooting….

I’m glad I did…..got some rippers, in the end! Thank goodness for the heavy clouds, makes shooting after dawn so much easier!

Canon 5D, 16-35mm at ?, f/11, 0.6”, ISO 50….lee nd grad filters, tripod, cable release, firm footing on high ground, surging tide. (focal length is unknown since the camera isn’t talking to the lens anymore….sigh)

Lovely photo Mel, the emotion is tangible :-) Doesn’t matter that your camera and lens have a “thing” – they are still producing shots like this, they could go on not talking forever at this rate for all we care!!! LOL

Believing as you obviously DO in the power of the image, in the literacy of the image to communicate something necessary and useful, it is good to see your own resourcefulness at finding the clear message within a moment by BEING THERE to capture the poetry of rock unmoved by swell and storm. Great work. —Tim

So camera and lens had a lovers’ spat? I’m doing half price on the Belgian choccies today… maybe you could intervene?

Massive shot. If we had scenes like this in Belgium… I STILL wouldn’t get up at those hours. You are amazing.

  • Mel Brackstone replied

Perserverance at its finest Mel. This looks epic in black and white with the swirling waters around the rocks and the menacing sky looking as though it’s about the create a black hole in the centre of the sky. If Ken doesn’t regret sleeping in after seeing this then I don’t know what else to say!

Hell rises out of the cauldron,
    It’s moments numbered,
    Still it seethes as though,
    It could control the sea,
    Swirled by the devil,
    laughing in his hideous reign,
    he raises his fist,
    Proclaiming this his domain,
    God laughs,
    Stirs the waters,
    Turns and walks away.

    Utterly stupendous!
