Dusk over Parliament

Old Parliament House – Canberra

Old Parliament House, formerly known as the Provisional Parliament House, was the seat of the Parliament of Australia from 1927 to 1988. The building was opened in 9 May 1927 as a temporary base for the Commonwealth Parliament following its relocation from Melbourne to the new capital, Canberra, until a grander building could be constructed.

Designed by John Smith Murdoch and a team of assistants, the design brief extended from the building to include its gardens, décor and furnishings. The building is in the Stripped Classical Style, common in Australian government buildings constructed in Canberra during the 1920s and 1930s.
The building was intended to be neither temporary nor permanent – only to be a ‘provisional’ building that would serve as a parliament for fifty years. In 1988, the Commonwealth Parliament transferred to the new Parliament House on Capital Hill. It also serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, lectures and concerts.

    Thanks Michael,

I’m amazed sometimes at how you can set your camera up the same and sometimes it worls for ou and other times it doesn’t. Rawuel and I were ther for over an hour took 100+ shots and onlya few came good.

lol, yep true true true;) but im always happy if i come away with a couple of keepers from any shoot. I take a lot less picture than i use to but really concentrate and try to be as thoughtful and creative as i can on the ones i do take, almost like im shooting on expensive film.

  • Melanie Roberts replied

Because I was shooting at dusk I did a lot every couple of minutes and used auto bracket to get the differing samples of light.. If you look at the two it goes from purples and golds to blue as it got darker

Oh and i forgot to say it was worth it because this is really stunning!

  • Melanie Roberts replied

It certainly was, although I really like the colour variations in this one

Canberra really does come into it’s own when the sun goes down doesn’t it?

  • Melanie Roberts replied

It can be a pretty place at night and during the Canberra festival – We get great autmn colours too. Although some of the more modern buildings leave a bit to be desired

    Hey Melanie,
This is one excellent photo! I love the way New Parliament flagpole looks like it is part of old parliament house. Nicely done.

  • Melanie Roberts replied

    Thanks Keith,

Because of the way both houses are built I used the flagpole from New to ensure I was dead centre photographing the old…lol
