The first day or two of the cygnets’ lives are usually spent in the nest with their mother. But after that they are drawn to the water and swimming with the family. The cygnets are often given rides on the backs of their parents to
keep them safe from pike, who are capable of swallowing small cygnets whole!
Whilst swimming, their mother will often lead the fleet followed by the cygnets and their father bringing up the rear to keep them safe.
I love to see the new cygnets each year, fingers crossed they survive, this couple raised 8 babies to maturity last year.
