i had what was probably my most distressing day in marrakech…..saddened and sometimes even a little angered by what i had seen going on around me. the treatment of the animals, the treatment of eachother…..i decided to head back home…..i wanted nothing more than to get out of there on the next train…...i saw this guy up ahead of me and thought for a moment about what being surrounded by this everyday does to your head…...you couldn’t live here and maintain the level of empathy that we can allow ourselves to feel at home….. with safety nets, animal rights and the rest of it….these things don’t exist here…...not because these people are mean spirited….but simply because they are too busy trying to survive…..i thought…..how long would it take to errode my compassion…...?

WOW – what a powerful image and even more powerful description. There is so much to love about this image… the colour, tone, typography, mood, texture and feel, the angled shadow shows there is nowehere to go but towards the darkness… This figure looks downtrodden, and I love the way the fabric and hood drape and the grey drab colour mirrors the colour of the road. What’s in front of the figure – looks like some mangy cats… LOVE THIS SO MUCH – STUNNING!

yeah paul you mentioned the cats…. you’ve got good eyes… there were a litter of kittens dumped on the side of the road there…. starving, being swarmed by flies…. i really had trouble dealing with it some days….i was either having the time of my life…or practically weeping.

Marvellous descripton, you are so right, this is The Lucky Country ,how fortunate are we that we have the peace and the freedom and all that goes with it. It should never be taken for granted!

I find your description of this image disturbing and moving….the muslim graphiti in this is also a high focal point for me…slightly connecting me with this old world culture, but only slightly….
i could never feel comfortable in a place such as this….your work is a credit to your dedication to photography.

suffering animals is something that I can’t deal with too. It can be soul destroying to witness.
