Wolves Watch the Winter Bison

Wolves Watch the Winter Bison

Dead of winter in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley. Wolves and Bison coexist, but if the Bison weaken they may fall prey to the patient wolf pack. Absent obvious illness or weakness in the Bison, the wolves remain a safe distance knowing that the injury they would incur in a frontal attack would undoubtedly lead to their own demise.

How in the world did you get into yellowstone in the dead of winter? So lucky, great shot.

  • Ken McElroy replied

Charlene – the highway through Lamar Valley is kept open year round because it is the only way folks who live in Cooke City Mt. can get in or out – lucky for me.

Lucky you! I saw a wolf pack when I was there in January ‘08, but they were too far away. Cloer by was a small pack of bison with a lone coyote among them. I think he was seeking refuge from the wolves.
