    G’day Marvin,

You have lifted what could well have been simply a “bird-on-a-stick” shot to a much higher level by catching the raptor in such a fierce pose and with the plumage in an agressive display.
Good light and exposure, good focus, great depth of field, good contrast and wonderful natural colours.
    Good work mighty bird hunter!

Marvin, this is stupendous! I have always wanted to be able to take wild life shots, but I am an eon away from that. Please let me know what type of lens and settings you use for that type of photo. You are a genius!

  • Marvin Collins

    Marvin Collins

Thanks Sue, but if I can do this…...honestly anyone can. I use a Canon 40D and 20D,and a Canon 400mm 5.6L lens. The Canon L series lenses are well known for their sharpness and color rendition. These lenses aren’t cheap but they are worth every penny. Also if you don’t use Canon, the other manufacturers make a very similar line of pro lenses.

I shoot at 6 frames per second most of the time when I shoot birds. I use shutter preferred automatic at 1/1000th of a second if the light permits. The slowest shutter speed I use to shoot birds in flight is 1/500th of a second and I don’t like to use 1/500th. I really prefer to use manual exposure using the camera’s meter for the settings because sometimes the meter will vary from shot to shot and I don’t like some of those shots. In low light I use ISO 400, in great light I prefer to use ISO 200 or even occasionally ISO 100. You really need good light for good sharp bird photos depending on the effect you want. There are many other really great bird shooters on RB, look in the raptors group and you will see some awesome photographers much better than I am.
I hope all this makes sense, if not, keep asking questions.

Thanks, Marvin for all that information. You make it sound so easy, but I know better, LOL. I copies all the info and emailed it to myself. I will save it for a great reference. I want to by a lens like that and then a good macro lens. Gee, all it takes is MONEY….........

  • Marvin Collins replied

LOL….......you’re right about the money thing and I don’t even have the lens that I eventually want, but that one costs about $5500 and I may never be able to justify that one.
