After Goldie - Atama Paparangi by

This was commissioned by a descendent of Atama Paparangi.
Charles Frederick Goldie, OBE (1870-1947) was a well-known New Zealand artist, famous for his portrayal of Māori dignitaries.
I am uploading this as an example of a commission that can turn into a study of a master, in this case the master is Mr.C.F.Goldie. I learned a lot from painting this picture. I purposely chose to use a ‘redder’ palette than the original by Goldie (as I have chosen to do on other works After the Masters)
oil on canvas

Cary drew in biro from the age of 4 until his first oil painting at the age of 16. With the strong foundation of the values of drawing when he began painting there was an explosion of bright colour in his art. The creative flood-gates had opened! Cary has won many Art Awards all over Australia, ranging from The Portland Art Prize and more recently the Bendemeer Art Prize (twice).
“With my art, I focus on the beauty of our environment and our effect we have upon the natural world.”

Stunning and dramatic portrait, Cary. You captured the subjects spirit.

  • Thanks Seth…..but all credit of spirit capture should go to the Master Mr Goldie! google him and you will see why!

Impressive personality. I like the way you use that monchrome feel. It gives the patina of old photography and adds a lot.

  • Yes the Master Goldie had a more umber palette – I used a redder one.
