This was a commissioned work from the NRMA back in the early 90s. This scene I researched extensively at the John Oxley Library. Years ago when the Trams ran in Brisbane, there was a Service Station on the corner of Stanley and Main, right next to the famous ‘Gabba’ Cricket ground.

Cary drew in biro from the age of 4 until his first oil painting at the age of 16. With the strong foundation of the values of drawing when he began painting there was an explosion of bright colour in his art. The creative flood-gates had opened! Cary has won many Art Awards all over Australia, ranging from The Portland Art Prize and more recently the Bendemeer Art Prize (twice).
“With my art, I focus on the beauty of our environment and our effect we have upon the natural world.”

Back in the days when Service Station was a place where you actualy were given service !!
    Love all your paintings Cary!!

  • Yes the days of service are far behind. although about 3 years ago we were traveling south along the New England Hwy, we stopped at a Glen Innes Servo and the Elderly Gentleman (who worked there) came out and put the petrol into our car, topped up the tires and cleaned the windscreen! He then asked “how’s your oil going sir?” the oil was fine. We just stood there lapping up this bit of good old fashioned service!!! what a nice man and what great service!
