‘Swy’ is another name for ‘2 up’ a popular Australian game pre WWII days, especially with the Shearers.
This painting was the first painted in the series of ‘Looking Up’ compositions. There is another smaller version of this…upload later. So this is the original – the first of its type! The idea just popped into my head one night when I was cleaning/scraping off my paint palettes – I could see something in the paint layers that looked a bit like this composition…. it was late at night, maybe I was half asleep or something I don’t know, sometimes ideas/visions come when I am tired. Just a lucky thing that the dried paint layers gave me the inspiration! So I went with it… just go with the flow!
I painted ‘The Toss’ for an Cricket Art Competition in Sydney last year.

cary, mcaulay, abstract, australia oil

Cary drew in biro from the age of 4 until his first oil painting at the age of 16. With the strong foundation of the values of drawing when he began painting there was an explosion of bright colour in his art. The creative flood-gates had opened! Cary has won many Art Awards all over Australia, ranging from The Portland Art Prize and more recently the Bendemeer Art Prize (twice).
“With my art, I focus on the beauty of our environment and our effect we have upon the natural world.”

Wow. I am in awe of your perfect foreshortening!!

  • Thanks Colleen! Yes – with this one , once I had the idea I painted it as soon and as fast as I could! I didn’t want to loose that Spontaneous feel, It took me one day in the studio to paint, but that was after drawing all through my childhood and then painting from my teens…

I keep looking at this and see more – so clever how you don’t see their faces because they’re looking up at the toss – brilliant!!!

  • yeah I didn’t ever think that would be the case at the start but I must say that it was a lot of fun to paint…not that it didn’t challenge me technically . :o)

Astonishing work! So uniquely ‘Australian’! It would be great to put this into some sort of Anzac Day tribute. Anyone out there listening to me??? This should be on the RB Homepage on the 25th of April!

  • Thanks again Lynda, I hope that someone is listening!
