The second in my fairytale series. This one has a contemporary theme. Here Hansel and Gretel are two rejected orphans of Belarus with birth defects, photographed by Robert Knoth and exhibited in the World Press Photos of 2006.

“It is not known for certain whether exposure to radiation can be linked to such conditions, but the Belarus government estimates a 250 percent increase in birth defects after the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, just across the border in Ukraine.”

I drew parallels with the Hansel & Gretel story and set out to include not only the elements of the dark shadowy forest but also the Chernobyl Plant Smoke stack in the background.

Original Photographer won an Honorable Mention in the Portrait section of the 2006 World Press Photography Prize: Robert Knoth, The Netherlands, TCS/Castrasto for Greenpeace International.

I like the way the fairy tale is being subverted through your work. Also we get to revisit the classics and think again in the modern day. Eternally relevant.

Hadn’t spotted this before – a significant piece of work……
Especially since you put it into such a contemporary human context.

  • Thanks mufa. I appreciate your comment!

This is an intelligent, deep work with a devastating message. The contemporary slant on the fairytale is complemented by your painting style and choice of colour, even the composition sits between both worlds. Excellent!

  • Thank you Estelle for your truly thoughtful comment.
The piece came together so well with a message I hope most will take note of.

There are very few artists that I have so enjoyed looking at their work. I have to say I have a hard time deciding on favorites. This one is marvelous but then they all are.

You are one very talented lady.

  • Thank you Linda for your comments and stopping by to look at my portfolio.

Great image. All the old fairy tales could be brought back to life in modern times and it’d be fun to see how they were illustrated today.

  • Yes Cindy! I nearly explored this as a major work idea. Thanks for the comment.
