Antipodean Horizon 1956
Silkscreen Monoprint.
This is a variation from the original series of Monoprints titled Amsterdam to Adelaide, 1956. A Celebration of 50 years of becoming Australian.
This features my mothers family; Opa, Oma, Tante Willy, Mum, Tante Anne, Liesje and Dirk.
This image stirs a lot of emotion in me as I can’t begin to imagine leaving everything you know behind, family, culture and language to move to an unknown place in hope of a better future for your family.
Well done Opa, if you hadn’t I wouldn’t be here today!!!

My mother and our friend, Gerda, had stayed composed when we left Amsterdam. The bus that had brought us and all the relatives and friends from Gouda, to farewell us, drove on to IJmuiden, where the J.v.O., was to go through the lock and enter the North Sea.
There, they waved to us, one more time, from the docks, down below, and then my best (primary school-) friend, Pietje Perdijk, put his arm to his face and that’s when the tears came for the two women as well.
My mother said so often, afterwards: That’s when I asked myself: “What have we done. These two friends will probably never see each other again.”
