Hand Of Hades
The abduction of Persephone
“Far from Demeter and Zeus, she was playing with the deep-bosomed daughters of Oceanus and gathering flowers over a soft meadow, roses and crocuses and beautiful violets, irises also and hyacinths and the narcissus which Earth made to grow at the will of Zeus, to be a trap for the bloom-like girl—a marvelous, radiant flower. The meadow was a thing of awe to see: from its root grew a hundred blooms and it smelled most sweetly, so that all wide heaven above and the whole earth and the sea’s salt swell laughed for joy. And the girl was amazed and reached out with both hands; but the wide-pathed earth yawned, and Hades sprang out upon her. He caught her up reluctant on his golden chariot and bore her away lamenting,to the underworld forever more.”

8 days of countless hours, trashing it and starting over and over and over till I got this. I think I am happy now!

Lovely imagery; I first heard this story in grade 10; read it without any illustrations, but I think that allows readers to form more powerful images for it is incedible what the imagination can do. It is interesting to see how others draw out such scenarios. Your image is very unique with persephone wrapped erotically in red; whereas other illustrated Greek myths I’ve seen portray their characters in Greek white robes. The red is suitable for Persephone though, as she is the goddess who paints the flowers. Also like the way she is staring at the bright heavens before she is pulled into the darkness for eternity. I have seen another picture of Hades abducting Persephone before, but in that one Persephone does not really appear to show resistance; her eyes were closed and body leaning back as Hades with his arm around her waist pulls her down.
