The Homestead

The Homestead

This house was built in 1929 in the Prairie’s of Manitoba…and is of a time almost gone…when every family worked the land to stay alive, well fed, and healthy. From a time when we were forced to reckon with Mother Earth just to survive on a basic level. The Prairie lifestyle is almost lost…being replaced with suburbs and expanding cities. The wildlife forced to retreat or be removed when they are a nuisance. Bears and deer are becoming scarce.Once upon a time the earth was our life and she cries out for repair….with every passing year in the Prairies there are fewer and fewer working the land to survive. A way of life lost…. **
My Father In-laws childhood home…I found out last week that this was torn down 2 wks after this shoot…we had no idea this was going to happen…...

This has always been one of my favorites of yours. I was just thinking about it yesterday in fact. It deserves an award of some kind. You should submit this to a magazine (Yes, I am totally serious)

I am sorry to read that your father-in-laws childhood home was torn down 2 weeks after this picture was taken. BUT i am glad you memorialized it. It is an enchanting image. I like the way there is a flash of light on the old white house, calling out like a beacon of hope. And i love the surreal sense that something is brewing in the sky . . .

Beautiful light and clouds, wonderful old tractor in the foreground. I love the way the light hits the house – so sad it is gone now, but glad you took this shot when you did. It really does evoke a different time and different way of life with a rythmn to the days, to the seasons – slower and more steady than the way we live now.
